The jacarandas around Goodna are turning purple, and the Goodna Jacaranda Festival is on this week: Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October at Evan Marginson Park.
Every October my phone starts ringing with people wanting their jacaranda pruned while it's in flower. Here's the honest advice. Leave it alone.
You lose the show, and jacaranda timber is brittle, so bad cuts tear instead of sealing and the wound sits there rotting. Prune it after the flowers drop, late November or into summer, and keep it light. Crossing limbs, dead wood, anything over the roof.
Whatever you do, don't let anyone lop it. Lopped jacarandas send up a broom of weak regrowth and never get their shape back.
The photo is one of our climbers up a gum rather than a jacaranda, but it's the same job. Roped in, working off a harness, taking out what needs to go and leaving the rest alone.
Tree pruning in Goodna and Redbank on jacarandas, poincianas and the odd giant camphor is something we do a lot of over summer, so book early if you want it done before Christmas. And if our crew has been to your place this year, a quick Google review makes a real difference. Free quotes on 1300 239 626.
