There’s nothing fancy about this window — and that’s exactly the point.
Keeping the original style and proportions means the finished window looks like it’s been well cared for throughout its life.
The timber was repaired, the rot removed and the window brought back into good working order, rather than replacing it with something completely different.
Keeping all the windows consistent keeps the character of the home intact — and gives this old window plenty more years of service.
Repair. Restore. Keep the original character.

BROKEN WINDOW HORN — WITHOUT REPLACING THE WINDOW
Failed spiral balancers had caused the top sash to be forced open, breaking the original cast aluminium horn.
The top sash wasn't required to open, so I machined a custom cedar insert, tightly scribed to the sill.
A simple, removable solution that saved the window from replacement.
Then your separate video can be much punchier:
REPAIR COMPLETE
Custom cedar insert fitted.
Top sash secured.
Window operating perfectly.
Sometimes you don't need a new window. You need a smarter repair!

BROKEN ALUMINIUM WINDOW HORN?
Top sash had been forced open after the spiral balancers failed, breaking the original cast aluminium horn.
The client didn't need the top sash to open, so rather than replacing the entire window, I machined a custom cedar insert, scribed tightly to the sill.
No glue.
No permanent modification.
A snug, removable repair if it's ever needed.

Old job, interesting access!
One of the more interesting window restoration jobs I’ve tackled.
These windows were located directly above a glass-roofed sunroom, making access and repairs a little more challenging than your average window.
The job included:
Sill repairs using my timber restoration system
New timber sashes
Replacement of glazing where required
Upgrading the original 3mm float glass to laminated glass where the glass needed to be removed
Careful restoration while retaining the original character of the windows
The existing roof glazing was 20mm laminated glass, but I still preferred working from the supporting frame rather than standing on the glass.
The old 3mm float glass in the windows was not suitable for the application, so upgrading the glazing was an important part of the restoration.
Another example of why a rotten window doesn’t automatically mean it needs to be replaced.
If your timber windows are starting to show rot, send through some photos. There may be a lot more life left in them than you think.

ROT REPAIRED WITH TIMBER — THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.
Rot is cut out completely and replaced with new timber, giving the repair real structural integrity rather than simply filling the problem.
Don’t be fooled into thinking epoxy repairs are automatically better. In my opinion, once you’re relying on a filler to replace missing timber, there’s not a huge difference between epoxy and builders bog.
Where possible, I prefer to cut the rot out and splice in new timber.
It’s a proper timber repair, not just a patch over the problem.

New life for these old awning sash windows. Can also upgrade glass and fit weather seals, better than new!
