What do the bi pride flag colours really mean? And a correction on my Bi Visibility Day post from last year 😬
💖 Pink represents attraction to the same gender as you
💙 Blue represents attraction to OTHER gender/s
💜 Purple represents a beautiful blend of both types of attraction.
The “bi” in bisexual refers to two types of attraction (same gender identity and other/s) - not simply an attraction to two genders on a binary.
Bisexuality is the potential to be romantically or sexually attracted to more than one gender identity - including non-binary and gender-diverse peeps!
My post last year said 💙 = opposite gender attraction! (Which, I’m embarrassed to say revealed my own misconceptions and unconscious binary biases - despite identifying as gender diverse myself! I’m really sorry to anyone following along who felt excluded by that post 💔😘. It’s been removed from my grid).
To quote the Bisexual Manifesto (first published in 1990): “Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity. Do not assume that bisexuality is binary or dougamous in nature; that we must have “two” sides or that we MUST be involved simultaneously with both genders to be fulfilled human beings. In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders. Do not mistake our fluidity for confusion, irresponsibility, or an inability to commit. Do not equate promiscuity, infidelity, or unsafe sexual behavior with bisexuality. Those are human traits that cross ALL sexual orientations. Nothing should be assumed about anyone’s sexuality—including your own.”
