Amethyst eggplants, lemon cucumbers, radishes, cherry tomatoes. That’s what Gardenstead member ‘Belgiangarden’ has been growing from seed this year, in Zone 8a, Belgium.

After fifteen years and a handful of continents and climates, they are back on home soil and experimenting with what can grow from seed in their short growing season.

This summer ran hotter than expected, heatwaves included. Short growing season, new climate to relearn, and a full trial list anyway. That’s what a first proper season looks like. Follow along. (Link in bio)

🌿 Some of the hardest workers in your garden have never read a seed packet.

In the southern spring, frogs are calling from ponds and bees are back in the blossom. In the northern autumn, birds are working the seed heads and anything small and spiny is looking for a leaf pile to sleep in.

Who lives in your garden? Tell us in the comments, and if you’ve caught them on camera, even better.

Why not share a window into your garden world in our free app too. We have an entire community of your garden friends there.

Gardenstead member Gayla Trail-Risk started gardening at five years old, weeding her family’s postage-stamp yard in the UK. Paula is now fifty years in, with a home patch, a greenhouse, and a local allotment, and the past seventeen years have been spent gardening for a living.

🌿

She had written off onions after downy mildew took last year’s crop. Then she tried the Santeros variety and they have been a huge success. Elsewhere on the plot: biquinho chillies, tomatoes, courgettes, beans, blackberries by the handful. In the flower beds it is Gaillardia ‘Mesa Yellow’, helenium, Cosmos sulphureus, Rudbeckia hirta ‘Green Eyes’, a David Austin ‘Golden Celebration’ rose, and sweet peas. The bees have found all of it.

She gardens in Zone 8b, and still loves learning what one piece of ground will do.

The meteorological calendar has turned. Spring begins in the southern hemisphere, autumn in the northern.

In Melbourne the wattle blooms are just starting along with the first flush of alliums. In Amsterdam it is apple harvest time and the beginning of autumn foliage beginning to turn before falling. In Auckland peas are going in the ground. In Brooklyn tomatoes are ripening faster than anyone can eat them.

What is beginning or ending in your patch today?

There are no failures in a garden. Only things you know now that you didn’t last season.

If this year has felt hit and miss, tested or surprised you, you’re in good company. The old rule book doesn’t always fit the garden in front of us anymore. The gardeners getting somewhere are the ones giving things a go and telling the rest of us what happened. This is how we learn.

So show us yours. One thing you’re trying differently in your garden as the season turns, and why. A new sowing time. A crop you’ve never grown. A bed you’re leaving fallow. A water-saving swap. A houseplant moved for the light. Working or not working yet, it still counts here at Gardenstead!

🌿 To enter:
1. Take one photo of the thing you’re trying.
2. Tell us what it is and why, in a line or three.
3. Comment it below, or post it on your own feed with and tag gardenstead .

🌿 One gardener wins four books, posted to your door anywhere in the world:
• The Productive Garden Companion by NATASHA MORGAN ,
• Nettles and Petals and Plants Need Friends Too! by Jamie Walton | Nettles & Petals
• Tomatoes and Basil on the 5th Floor by Patrick Vernuccio

🌿 Total prize value: US$140 (£72, A$150). One of them is for a child, on purpose. Curiosity is what makes a gardener, and the youngest ones have the most of it.

Entries close Wednesday 30 September, 11:59pm AEST.
Winner announced Wednesday 21 October.
Open to gardeners 18 and over worldwide.
Full terms in the first comment.

🌿 Curious Gardeners is a group inside the Gardenstead app where trials get posted and reported back on, with a southern spring checklist, a northern autumn checklist and a trial card pinned at the top.

📣📣Gardenstead Makeover winner announcement

You have been waiting 132 days for this, and we know that is a long time. (And yes we’ve been working towards this moment for that long!)

When we opened the Gardenstead Makeover we had no idea what was coming. 574 entries arrived from gardens all over the world 🌍, and every single one of them was read properly and given the time it deserved. That is what took us so long. This was not the kind of selection that just randomly pulled a name out of a hat. We wanted to get this right, because a real makeover is about to happen in a real person’s garden.

The winner of the Gardenstead Makeover is Hannah, Gardenstead member , Manchester, UK.

Congratulations Hannah 🥳🍾🎉. We are so excited for you and we cannot wait to be standing in your garden.

To everyone who entered, thank you. Thank you from the whole Gardenstead Team. 💚🌱

Thank you for your patience while we worked through them all, and thank you for letting us into your gardens the way you did. We were not expecting this many of you and we were not expecting entries this good.

This is just the very beginning of the journey and we can’t wait to share more! So stay with us and follow along!

Did you think we’d forgotten? 🤔

We didn’t. It has been 130 days since Gardenstead Makeover entries closed, and we’ve been working on it - every single one of them.

When we launched the Gardenstead Makeover Competition back in March, it was our first ever giveaway (and we thought we’d make it global 💡🌎!) Looking back, we really had no idea what we were about to get ourselves into. Then 574 entries arrived from all over the globe. 🌏

Pulling a name out of a hat would have taken five minutes.

This was never that kind of giveaway.

We read every single entry, and then we had to be certain we could bring a whole garden makeover to the winner’s gate, wherever on the planet that gate turned out to be. Have we learned some things along the way? MOST DEFINITELY!

📣 And this is when it starts getting really exciting!

🚨The winner announcement lands this weekend.

Are you ready to find out who the winner is?

Late August has a particular quality on both sides of the world. The sharp edges from the middle of the season are beginning to soften.

If you’re in the north, the harvest basket is getting heavier. Tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, all coming in at once. The freezer may be filling up and the herb glut is real.

If you’re in the south, the ground is starting to answer when you press a finger into it. Seedlings are starting on windowsills. The first proper day of warmth feels close.

Tell us what the standout is in your patch is this week. Picking or sowing, we’d love to know. And if you haven’t already shared a little of your patch on our free app, wherever you are and however you might be gardening, even just a pot on a balcony, a courtyard, allotment or acreage, this is your invitation. We would love to see you there. 🌱

Reigniting a passion for seed saving, one seed at a time.
🌿

That’s S.O.S in Norfolk, UK, growing runner beans, courgettes, tomatoes, and Red Duke of York potatoes this summer. A no-dig novice with a veg garden and a quiet mission to save what grows well.

For anyone in the southern hemisphere, spring sowing is weeks away. For anyone up north, this is the window where the seeds from a good season become next year’s garden. Head to their profile. Link in bio.
