🌿💚 Love gardening? Your garden could help protect one of Perth's most precious ecosystems. 💚🌿

Did you know that the beautiful banksia woodlands found across the Swan Coastal Plain support an incredible diversity of plants, birds, insects and wildlife, yet they're facing increasing pressure from urban development, fragmentation and invasive species?

Join Steve McCabe from ReWild Perth to discover how simple gardening choices can make a real difference. Learn about:
🌱 Choosing plants that support local biodiversity
💧 Waterwise gardening practices
🦜 Creating habitat for birds, pollinators and other wildlife
🌿 How your garden or verge can help contribute to the recovery of banksia woodlands across Perth

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn how the small changes we make at home can have a positive impact on Perth's unique natural environment.

🌱📚 Have you discovered your local Seed Library? 📚🌱

Seed libraries are a wonderful community resource that allow gardeners to collect seeds, grow them at home, and then save seeds from their harvest to return for others to enjoy. It's a simple idea that helps preserve diverse plant varieties, reduces waste and makes gardening more affordable.

October is the perfect time to sow many warm-season favourites, including: 🍅 Tomatoes 🥒 Cucumbers 🎃 Pumpkins 🫘 Beans 🌻 Sunflowers 🌿 Basil

You can often find seed libraries at local libraries, community gardens and neighbourhood centres. If you find one, share it in the comments below to help spread the word.

Warmer weather doesn't just bring flowers and fresh growth. It also signals the return of some common garden pests 🐛

👀 Keep an eye out for: 🐛 Caterpillars 🟢 Aphids clustering on soft new growth, flower buds and stems 🪲 Lawn beetles which can leave brown patches in otherwise healthy lawns 🐌 Snails and slugs enjoying seedlings and leafy greens

Before reaching for the spray bottle, remember that many garden visitors are part of a healthy ecosystem. Ladybirds, lacewings, praying mantises and small birds can help keep pest numbers under control naturally.

🌿 A few simple tips:
✅ Check plants regularly for early signs of damage
✅ Encourage beneficial insects with flowering plants
✅ Give plants the right amount of water and fertiliser to keep them healthy and resilient
✅ Hand-pick larger pests where practical

🍋🌿 Feed your citrus now for a bumper summer harvest! 🌿🍋

If you have a lemon, lime, orange or mandarin tree at home, now is the perfect time to give it a boost. As the weather warms up, citrus trees are busy flowering, growing new leaves and developing fruit.

💚 Top tips for happy citrus: 🍋 Apply a quality citrus fertiliser around the drip line (the area beneath the outer edge of the canopy) 💧 Water deeply before and after fertilising 🌱 Top up mulch to help keep roots cool and soil moist 🐝 Keep an eye out for blossoms - they're a favourite food source for pollinators.
