The great Bogong Moth migration is happening right now. The Mountains garden is covered in the, as is the Sydney townhouse courtyard garden.

Each spring, endangered Bogong Moths make an epic migration of up to 1,000 km to Australia's alpine zone from warm inland plains of Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria to the Alpine regionsdown south. Meanwhile, critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums wake up from hibernating under the snow, hungry for Bogong Moths.

Bogong Moths used to fly to the possums’ mountain home in the billions, but their numbers have significantly decreased over recent years. This now means these marvellous moths are in peril, and there may not be enough food for these tiny possums to raise their young.

When the weather cools down, they migrate back to the inland lowlands and plains to breed and lay eggs.

A true wonder of Nature unfolding before our eyes 😍

Yes! You can grow orchids in grow bags!
They don't like wet feet and appreciate oxygen at the roots and as the Root Pouch grow bags are free draining and allow oxygen to pass through the fabric to reach the roots, these are perfect containers!
I inherited my late parents' love of orchids and now that the townhouse garden is established and I'm tracking where the sunlight hits from season to season, I can now expand my collection! They are low maintenance and the blooms last weeks and weeks!
Check out the range of grow bags in my Bio or www.upontherooftop.com.au

I received questions about my method of protection of plants from birds and bugs and here's a quickie tour of the very simple structures I put up to fend them off.
My go-to supports are the Jack - Love your Outdoors Regency Stakes. They come in 2 lengths with a round ball top which means netting slides over them effortlessly.
My Blueberries in the townhouse garden are in full bloom! Soooo early this year and hardly a pollinator in sight. Remains to be seen how much fruit sets.

Where is Up On the Rooftop now?
We've been through alot of change in the last 2 years.
I'm still working in the garden, one in a cold climate and another in another urban small space which is much smaller and more challenging than the former Balcony garden.
It's work in progress but the winter season has been pretty bountiful with a narrow range of edibles that will thrive in limited sunlight. I've been focussing on improving the soil quality of the pots by making compost to counter the lack of sunshine and it seems to be paying off. Perhaps the milder winter had something to do with it too.
You can do alot with a small space, less can definitely be more!
Ps if you're interested in the Root Pouch grow bags you can find them in our store via the link in my Bio.

Winter fires in the mountain home are always opportunities to make biochar! 🔥
My go-to is the Crafty Gatherer biochar maker, a stainless steel tool made to turn yard waste and organic debris into carbon-rich biochar. It fits easily inside a woodburner fireplace, fire pit, or drum fire to process materials safely via pyrolysis.
The burner uses a low-oxygen process (pyrolysis) to bake organic matter rather than burn it completely to ash. Accepted inputs include wood chips, small prunings, nut shells, dried manure, cardboard, bones and my favourite is oyster shells.
The resulting sponge-like carbon structure holds water and gives microbes a home.
Raw biochar must be charged with nutrients (such as liquid fertilizer or compost) before adding it to garden soil. (Crafty Gatherer)

Dinner is served.
Lost my growing mojo for a while when we sold up and moved from the Balcony garden, the original Up On the Rooftop HQ.
Starting to get back into the swing of the growing seasons when back in the city from the mountains.
This new courtyard space has a very different microclimate to the Balcony. It doesn't have the air flow, nor the northerly all day sun, nor the pollinators, nor the wonderful outlook to expansive SKY. But it's just my city Digs when I'm not in the mountains, and never being one to let such things get in the way of growing some food, I've watched, listened and learned for a year and now just establishing the kind of garden that can flex with the seasons and deal with challenging growing conditions.
Tonight's harvest is my reward for patience.
Let's see what else can be grown here... Do you have a challenging space?

Behind the red door is my happy place. Stage one of a post summer clean up restores to me a place to potter and sit in the warm winter sun; a place to count seeds, to listen to bird song and contemplate the state of this world.
