🎃 Sometimes the simplest touches say fall best.

Seasonal decorating doesn’t have to mean completely transforming the front of your home.

A few pumpkins tucked among the garden, a fall planter at the door, a wreath or a favourite lantern can be enough to acknowledge the season while still letting your home and landscape take centre stage.

I think of these details as another layer of the landscape — little things that change with the seasons and help make a home feel welcoming.

Because landscaping isn’t only about what we put in the ground. 🍂

🌿 Your garden doesn’t have to happen in one year.

I think sometimes we put unnecessary pressure on ourselves to finish everything at once.

But a beautiful garden can be created over two years, three years — or longer.

Start with a plan. Decide what’s most important. Work within the time and budget that feel comfortable, and allow the garden to develop as you go.

Plants grow. Priorities change. You discover what you love — and occasionally what you don’t.

A garden isn’t a project with a finish line.

It’s something that can grow and evolve right along with you. 🌿

🌻 Find joy in the garden.

Gardens don’t always have to be carefully designed borders or perfectly planned spaces.

Sometimes they’re a field of sunflowers. A favourite flower finally coming into bloom. A handful of something brought inside for the kitchen table. Or simply stopping long enough to enjoy what’s growing around you.

Gardening should make you happy.

And sometimes, that really is the whole point. 💛

How much time do you actually want to spend working in your garden?

Some people genuinely love it. They’re happy spending a Saturday morning deadheading, dividing, weeding and moving a plant for the third time because this is definitely the right spot. 😉

Other people want a beautiful garden — but they’d much rather spend Saturday morning sitting in it with a cup of coffee.

Neither answer is wrong.

But they require very different gardens.

Good garden design isn’t about creating the garden you think you should have. It’s about creating one that fits the way you actually want to live.

🌿 Gardens have always been more than plants to me.

They’re places to slow down, have a cup of coffee, remember the people we love and enjoy the little changes that happen from one season to the next.

That feeling is a big part of why I created The Country Cottage Landscape Design.

I believe a garden should feel personal. It doesn’t have to be perfect or follow every trend. It should reflect the people who live there and become a place they genuinely want to spend time in.

Because sometimes the best part of gardening is simply sitting back and enjoying what you’ve created. 💚

🎃 Sometimes the garden spills right up onto the porch.

I had a little fun with our fall entrance this year.

A few mums, pumpkins in some not-so-traditional colours, and one rather large pumpkin bear later… the porch is ready for fall. 🍂

I love seasonal decorating that feels like an extension of the garden rather than something separate from it. It doesn’t need to be elaborate — just a few carefully chosen pieces can completely change the way an entrance feels.

And apparently, sometimes one of those pieces is a bear. 🐻🎃

🌿 Landscaping isn’t just about what goes in the ground.

When I think about an outdoor space, I think about the whole picture.

How does it feel when someone walks toward your front door? Do the planters complement the garden and the house? Does the entrance feel welcoming? Do the seasonal touches — a fall planter, a wreath on the door, fresh greenery at Christmas — feel like they belong?

Your landscape begins at the curb, but it doesn’t end at the garden bed.

The little details around your entrance help tell the story of your home, too.

Because the outside of your home should be a welcoming reflection of the home within. 🌿🏡

The colours become a little richer, the textures a little more interesting, and even a simple handful gathered from the garden can make the prettiest seasonal arrangement.

Black-eyed Susans, asters, coneflowers, sedum and late-blooming favourites can keep giving long after summer begins to fade.

So before you start cutting everything back, bring a little bit of the fall garden indoors. 🍂🌻

🌿 Your garden should feel like it belongs to your home.

Before choosing a single plant, I like to look at the house.

Its style, its colours, the entrance, the way you approach it — they all help tell us what the landscape around it should become.

A garden shouldn’t feel as though it was simply dropped onto the property. It should feel connected to the home it surrounds.

From the garden beds to the front entrance, the outside should be a welcoming reflection of the home within. 🏡🌿

Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean the gardening stops.

In fact, fall is one of my favourite times to be in the garden.

It’s a season for tidying, dividing, planting, planning — and taking a good look at what worked this year and what you might want to change for next.

Because beautiful gardens aren’t created in a single season. They grow, change and evolve right along with us. 🌿
