Small beetles can leave a big impact.
Our ATR crews has been removing dead spruce affected by spruce bark beetle, carefully dismantling trees and helping manage the changes left behind. We have been working on this property last few years and each year we remove a few spruce helps with the clients budget all while improving the property.
Much of the damage happens beneath the bark. Adult beetles and their larvae create feeding tunnels that damage the living tissues responsible for transporting sugars through the tree. When enough of this tissue is destroyed, the tree becomes girdled and dies.
Native to Nova Scotia, spruce beetles often attack weakened, stressed, or windthrown spruce. When populations build, they can also overwhelm the defences of healthy trees. By the time needles change colour and fall, damage beneath the bark may already be extensive.
Removing dead trees requires careful assessment, planning, and coordination. Our crews must consider the condition of each tree, the surrounding trees, and the space available for bringing material to the ground.
At ATR, understanding why trees decline also helps us plan for what comes next. Assessing the remaining trees and encouraging a suitable mix of species and ages can support a more resilient forest over time.
If your spruce are thinning, turning brown, or dying, contact ATR for an assessment. Identifying the cause is the first step toward making informed decisions for your property. Free assessments !
