next year’s Oklahoma Salmon and Mixed Zinnia seeds are picked 🌼 I keep the heads whole until they are completely dry and then I’ll remove the petals and put the seeds in an envelope until it is time to plant!

it’s corn!

Blue Hopi (the solid blue cobs pictured) is the oldest variety of anything that we grow. it is said to be over 500 years old! what a gift it is to be growing seeds that have been passed down through so many generations. as the world changes and seedless foods and hybrid seeds become more prevalent, please save your heirlooms. grow them. share them. celebrate them. make sure the varieties you love are still around 500 years from now.

we also grow a random mix of ornamental/popping corn that we have been seed saving over the years. every cob from the mix is a surprise until you peel back the husk and it’s so fun to see what mother nature creates!

Mushroom Basket is a 10/10

great flavour, good production and not very acidic so you can eat as many toasted tomato sandwiches as you want! it’s a better producer than our regular heirloom beefsteaks that we have been growing for years, so it will be replacing them in our greenhouse next year.

the goal with the garden this year is to actually make good notes of how everything grows and produces. we grow a lot of different varieties of some things, which can be fun, but also if something doesn’t grow well or we don’t like eating it, then it’s just taking up precious garden space.

garlic is one of our favourite things to grow! it’s very low maintenance as it is mostly set and forget. we also LOVE garlic and I definitely measure with my heart so it’s nice that we harvest enough for all our yearly garlic needs (fresh, frozen and dried), plus we will plant our best bulbs for next year.

we have a bit of an abundance this year so if you’re local to us in Lambton County and are looking for organically grown delicious garlic, reach out and we’ll get some to you! we grow the Music variety which has a strong flavour when raw, but it does mellow out when roasted. it is a really nice well rounded garlic!
