๐ŸŽƒ Pumpkin & Halloween โ€” Did You Know?

The tradition of carving pumpkins for Halloween actually began with turnips and other root vegetables, not pumpkins!

The custom comes from an old Irish tradition of carving vegetables into lanterns. When Irish immigrants came to North America, they discovered that pumpkins were much easier to carve and made wonderfully bright lanternsโ€”and the jack-oโ€™-lantern was born. ๐ŸŽƒ

Pumpkins themselves are native to North America and have been cultivated for thousands of years. Indigenous peoples grew squash and pumpkins as important food crops long before European settlers arrived.

And thereโ€™s a practical gardening bonus: donโ€™t throw away those pumpkin seeds! ๐ŸŒฑ
You can:

* Roast them for a delicious snack
* Save some seeds to plant next year
* Add pumpkin flesh to soups, muffins and breads
* Compost the pumpkin after Halloween (remove candles, paint and decorations first)
