How Not to Call Your Handyman:
Don’t Skip Prep Work Before Painting

Painting 🎨 goes a lot smoother if you put a bit of time into prep. Skipping this part will end in patchy spots, peeling edges, and paint that doesn't stick.

One time, I (yep — me) decided to paint a door without wiping it down first 😬. Rolled straight over the dust and fingerprints like it didn’t matter. Looked fine at first… until the paint dried. You could still see the smudge where I grabbed the side six months later.

Here’s what actually works:

✅️Wipe everything down with a damp rag — doors, walls, trim. Get the dust off.

✅Sand anything glossy or uneven. Doesn’t take much — just a light pass.

✅Fill holes and dents with spackle. Let it dry, then sand it flat.

✅️Wipe again. That sanding dust sticks to everything.

✅️Tape your edges and put something down on the floor to cut down on the mess.

It’s not complicated, just takes a bit of time — and saves you a lot of frustration later.

How Not to Call Your Handyman:
Take Down the Baby Gate and Patch the Wall

If the baby gate is no longer needed, now’s the time to take it down and clean up what it left behind.

Most screw-mounted gates pull out some drywall and leave a few holes. It’s nothing major, but it looks rough if you leave it too long.

Here’s what to do:

Unscrew the gate hardware and pull out any anchors. Don’t force them — you’ll make a bigger hole. 🪛

Fill the holes with lightweight spackle. A small putty knife works best.

Let it dry, then sand it smooth. Doesn’t need to be perfect, just flat.

If you’ve got touch-up paint, great. If not, leave it for now and deal with it when you paint next.🎨

Takes 15–20 minutes if you’ve got the stuff. Worth doing, especially if it’s in a hallway or near the front entry.⌚️

How Not to Call Your Handyman Monday
"Smoke & CO Alarms Gone Wild Edition"

Before your smoke alarm starts chirping at 2 a.m. and sends your dog into a panic attack—or worse, before a carbon monoxide leak goes undetected—take five minutes this week to do a quick check.

Here’s your Monday maintenance mission:

Change the batteries in all smoke alarms (yes, even the “hardwired” ones usually have backup batteries).

Test your carbon monoxide detectors—press and hold the test button until you hear the beep. If you don’t hear anything, that’s a problem.

Check the expiration date on your CO detectors. They typically only last 5–7 years. If it’s older than your last phone upgrade, it’s time to replace it.

Doing this now = one less emergency call (to me or 911) later.

✅ Gutters & Downspouts – Ice buildup can pull them loose or clog them up. Clear any blockages before the next melt-freeze cycle turns them into a disaster.

✅ Tree Branches – Heavy ice can snap branches, especially near your house, car, or power lines. If you see one hanging dangerously, handle it BEFORE it handles you!
