NILS STÆRK NILS STÆRK is a contemporary art gallery with an international profile, established in 1997 The gallery was established in 1997.

NILS STÆRK is a contemporary art gallery with an international profile based in Copenhagen. Today, the gallery represents both upcoming, mid-career, and established national and international artists working across various media and genres, united by a conceptual narrative exploring current societal values and conflicts in today’s globalized society. Since its inception, NILS STÆRK has fostered global collaborations, particularly within the Central and Latin-American art scene, as well as with global art institutions, biennales, and galleries, creating new projects and opportunities with its represented artists and placing their work in significant art collections. The gallery has since its inception participated in several international art fairs such as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Arco, Art Brussels, FIAC and ZsonaMaco. Initially located in a small gallery in the warehouse district at Islands Brygge, followed by a large space at Carlsberg Copenhagen, the gallery relocated to a 500 m2 former car workshop in the Northwest part of Copenhagen in the spring of 2017. This location still bears the mark of a raw, industrial aesthetic, a stark contrast to the gallery’s minimalistic interior designed by Henning Larsen Architects. In 2024, the gallery expanded with a second space in Copenhagen's city center, responding to increased interest in exhibitions featuring its artists. Situated on a bustling high street, this space intertwines its shows with the vibrant city through large, street-facing windows.

IN FOCUS

In Jone Kvie’s glass works, the material is approached not for its refinement, transparency, or decorative associations, but for its capacity to transform. Formed through extreme heat, flow, and cooling, glass exists in an unstable state, carrying within it the possibility of fracture.

Seen again nearly a decade after they were made, the works retain a tension between human gesture and geological transformation, between something shaped by hand and something that seems to belong to a much larger material process.

The works reveal a material that is at once responsive to the artist’s touch and subject to forces beyond his control.

Eliyah Mesayer's solo exhibition, "Letters from a Huntress", is currently on view at the gallery on Holbergsgade 19 through December 19.

On the wall hangs a strung bow, accompanied by six scattered arrows whose arrowheads have been replaced by fountain-pen nibs. Poised between stillness and release, the bow evokes the huntress’s capacity to orient herself and defend herself. Its tension suggests the suspended moment before something happens – an invisible force directed through aim. As the instruments of hunting and writing merge, the arrow becomes a message sent towards an unknown recipient.

NEW REPRESENTATION

We are pleased to announce the representation of Davide Hjort Di Fabio. The artist presented his first solo exhibition, "Clip-In," with the gallery in early 2026. We are delighted to continue our ongoing collaboration and support the development of his practice.

Davide Hjort Di Fabio (b. 1990, Popoli, IT; lives and works in Copenhagen, DK) works with sculpture, video, photography, and installation. His practice approaches sculpture as an extension of the human body, using materials such as ceramics, metal, and plastic to form abstract and organic structures. Through these material explorations, he examines q***rness as a fluid and relational condition shaped by personal experience and historical contexts. His work reflects on how bodies are continuously formed and negotiated within social, ecological, and structural frameworks.

Eliyah Mesayer’s work "Letters from a Huntress no. 5" (2026) is currently on view as part of her solo exhibition, "Letters from a Huntress", at our gallery at Holbergsgade 19 in Copenhagen.

At the heart of the exhibition is a new series of wall-hung works in the form of monumental black envelopes. Ordinarily intimate and commonplace, the envelope becomes at once a sculpture, a container, and the bearer of a message – one that may have been sent, received, or never opened. Constructed from large sheets of paper, the envelopes are closed with prominent seals. Each seal suggests both protection and inaccessibility: something has been entrusted to the envelope, yet its contents remain withheld.

OPENING TOMORROW

Gardar Eide Einarsson’s solo exhibition "The Purpose of a System is What it Does (POSIWID)" opens tomorrow at KODE, Bergen. The exhibition presents 25 years of artistic practice, bringing together more than 125 works, including new works commissioned for the exhibition.

Einarsson’s practice deals with repression, state violence and propaganda, tracing the ways in which “the violence under the surface” has risen into the daylight of our everyday. The exhibition highlights how his work foreshadowed much of the populist condition we currently find ourselves in. Working across installation, painting, sculpture, printmaking, video and photography, Einarsson draws on an ever-expanding archive to explore the visual culture and power structures that shape contemporary society.

Works by Torbjørn Rødland are currently featured in “GAG,” a group exhibition at the George Eastman Museum on view through April 11, 2027.

GAG proposes a bold new framework for understanding twenty-first-century photography and video. Beginning with the cinematic sight gag and its long history of comic interruption, the project expands to put in play uses of the terms associated with q***r ballroom vernacular, judicial gag orders, B**M and kink, choking and retching, and the dark feedback loops of social media and meme culture. What emerges is a rich conceptual language for work that refuses easy categorization: violent and slapstick, icky and sublime, funny and anxious, all at once.

IN FOCUS

For Jone Kvie, glass became a way of extending concerns already central to his sculptural practice: matter, transformation, geological processes, and the relationship between the human body and forces operating on vastly different scales.

Some works developed from an interest in flow and volcanic activity. Others were cast directly into wet sand, with Kvie using his hands to shape the negative space into which the molten glass was poured.

The resulting forms bring together traces of the body and a material whose behaviour remains volatile and difficult to fully control.

Gardar Eide Einarsson’s work "Not yet titled (baton 1–5)" (2008) is on view as part of the current focus26 presentation at our gallery on Glentevej 49.

"Not yet titled (baton 1–5)" is a series of rephotographed illustrations from a manual instructing police officers on how to quell protests. The works depict a hand holding a baton in the act of striking protesters, highlighting the choreography and aesthetics of violence embedded in such law enforcement manuals.
