Water pH does not tell the whole story.

Two water sources can have the same pH but very different alkalinity. Over repeated irrigation cycles, that difference can change the direction of root-zone pH and the availability of nutrients.

This practical guide explains what growers should request in a water analysis, how to compare the units and why the substrate specification should be matched with the real crop and feeding programme.

The same growing medium can stay wetter in a shallow tray than in a taller pot. That is not a contradiction. It is the way drainage and retained water interact with container height.

We have prepared a practical guide for nurseries that want to compare this properly. It includes a six-step pot test for measuring air space, explains what happens after saturation and drainage, and sets out what should remain consistent during a commercial trial.

Will the next growing media delivery behave like the last one?

Peat is a natural raw material, so some variation is expected. Reliable batch consistency comes from controlled sourcing, screening, formulation, testing and clear product specifications.

This new ASB Professional guide shows what buyers can verify: fraction or structure, comparable pH and EC methods, delivery identification, receiving records and the role of independent RHP certification.

Six weeks in a propagation tray and a full season in a nursery container are not the same job for a growing medium.

Our latest guide looks at what peat substrates for trees and shrubs actually need: a coarser fraction that resists compaction over months of watering, and a pH direction that matches the species, since acid-loving shrubs and general nursery stock are not the same group.

It also covers the trial to run before committing to a full-season order, since a mix that looks fine at potting can still lose structure well before the crop ships.

Comparing growing media suppliers? Look beyond the word “professional” on the bag.

Ask for the product specification, understand the certification scope, and agree how to evaluate the material in your own crop and irrigation system before ordering at scale.

Our new guide covers documentation, batch consistency, trial support and practical supply planning.

What's under the mushrooms matters as much as the mushrooms themselves.

The casing layer holds water for the crop and triggers pinning, and it has to survive wetting, watering and ruffling without losing its structure. Our new guide walks through what a mushroom farm should confirm before ordering casing peat: fraction, pH, moisture, structural stability and batch consistency, plus the common mistakes that come from comparing quotations on price alone.

ASB Professional supplies black peat for mushroom casing either ready-adjusted to pH 7, or as raw material at its natural pH for farms that prefer to lime it themselves.

Plant cuttings need a stable, well-managed root zone from the first day in the tray.

Our latest article shares a practical Nerium oleander propagation case using a 0-10 mm peat substrate in large trays. It explains the supplied composition, the nursery's reported rooting result, and the questions to settle before scaling a cutting programme.

The important point is not to copy a recipe without context. Crop type, cutting maturity, tray, moisture management and the local growing environment all need to work together.

For a vegetable nursery, the name potting soil is not enough to define the product.

In parts of the Middle East and North Africa, it often means a fine peat-based growing medium for seedlings and transplants. Before comparing an offer, a nursery should confirm the fraction, pH, wetting agent, nutrient package, bag size and current product information.

Our new guide looks at two supplied ASB Professional specifications: 80 L 0-5 mm and 250 L 0-10 mm potting soil for vegetable seedling work.

Fine or coarse is not the whole story with raw peat moss.

A 0-5 mm and a 0-40 mm fraction clearly feel different, but two lots at the same fraction can still behave differently depending on decomposition grade and colour. A weakly decomposed, fibrous peat holds air and structure differently than a darker, more humified peat screened to the same millimetre range.

Our new guide walks through all four ASB raw peat fractions, what each is typically used for, and what to confirm — fraction, decomposition grade, colour, packaging and trial plan — before requesting a quote.

pH and EC are common growing-media measurements, but the number alone does not tell the full story.

Before comparing a result, confirm the test method, extraction liquid, ratio, unit and sample condition. It also matters whether the report describes raw peat or a finished growing medium with pH adjustment, fertilizer or wetting agent.

Water alkalinity and the fertilizer programme can then change the root-zone result during the crop cycle.

Our new guide sets out a practical sequence for reviewing pH and EC data before a trial or larger commercial order.
