Pellets are back in the shops â but what should you look for?
With autumn approaching, bags of wood pellets are starting to reappear in supermarkets and DIY stores, and bulk or pallet deals can be tempting.
Before you stock up, look for ENplusÂź certification on the bag (ideally ENplus A1 for domestic heating appliances). Certified pellets have defined standards for things such as moisture, ash content and heat output, helping your stove burn efficiently and cleanly.
And if you're buying enough to last the winter, storage matters too. Keep bags somewhere dry and protected from moisture, ideally off the floor, and check that none of the bags have been damaged. Pellets readily absorb moisture, which can cause them to deteriorate and break down. A bargain pallet isn't such a bargain if half of it is damp by the time you need it!
