Victorian houses and dark colours? Absolutely. And here's why. šŸ’š

Did you know that Victorian homes were often full of colour?

Deep greens, burgundies, rich blues, patterned wallpapers, dark timber and beautiful decorative details. They certainly didn't decorate everything white!

So when Ani and her family told me they wanted to go darker in their Victorian home, I was delighted.

The house has some gorgeous original features, and we wanted to bring out their character while choosing something that suited the family's personality and energy.

We went for this beautiful dark green.

I love that we're bringing some of those richer colours back into our homes. You don't have to decorate an entire house in Victorian style to appreciate its history.

Old architecture and modern family life can work beautifully together.

I would never recommend something to a client that I wouldnā€™t use in my own home.

Especially when it comes to bathrooms.

I want the materials we choose to still look beautiful in ten or twenty years. Good sanitaryware, quality installation, mitred tile corners rather than plastic or aluminium trims, and lighting that has been properly thought through.

But quality doesnā€™t mean everything has to be safe or neutral.

The first thing you notice when you walk into this bathroom is that gorgeous red statement light. ā¤ļø It brings warmth, colour and personality to the whole space.

For me, thatā€™s luxury: quality that lasts, beautiful lighting and colour used with confidence.

A lot can happen in 90 minutes. šŸ˜Š

Before every Colour Consultation, I send a questionnaire so I can arrive with a good understanding of the home, what you like and a selection of colours to start with.

But the real decisions happen in the room.

Natural light, existing furniture, artwork, flooring, adjoining rooms and even different ceiling heights can completely change which colours work.

We compare samples, narrow down the options and sometimes end up going much bolder than expected. Then I use AI visuals to help you see the chosen colours on your own walls before you commit.

This family had lived with white walls for years because they couldnā€™t decide what colours would work.

Their open-plan family room and kitchen are south-facing, with different ceiling heights and a skylight, so choosing where colours should start and stop wasnā€™t straightforward.

During our 90-minute Colour Consultation, we looked at the light, their existing furniture and how the two spaces connect. We used large colour samples and AI visuals of their own room to find a combination that worked for the whole family.

By the end, they were excited to finally start decorating. šŸ˜Š

And afterwards, they received a full summary with their chosen colours, finishes and visuals.

Thereā€™s probably no better month to talk about pink šŸ©·

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and pink has become one of the most recognisable colours connected with a cause.

But our relationship with pink is surprisingly personal.
For some, it feels soft and comforting. For others, it brings back childhood bedrooms or feels far too feminine. And for many people this month, pink carries a much deeper meaning.

Thatā€™s one of the things I find fascinating about colour psychology. Our response to colour is shaped by memories, culture and our own experiences, not simply the colour itself.

I donā€™t want your home to look like a showroom.

When I started Onyx Interior Design, I said I wanted to bring more colour to Aberdeen. Iā€™m firmly working on it. šŸ˜Š

But colour is only part of what makes a home personal.

The art youā€™ve collected. Something you brought home from your travels. Your childrenā€™s paintings. Family photographs. Books. That inherited piece of furniture youā€™d never part with.

I want to know about those things because they belong in the design.

For me, a beautiful home should have colour, personality, comfort and quality, but it should also have pieces that mean something to the people who live there.

Thatā€™s why I donā€™t design homes that could belong to anyone.

Sleeping somewhere new is never easy. On the first night, one half of the brain stays on alert, according to researchers at Brown University. Warm colour on the walls, a soft rug, a lamp on each side of the bed and a place for their suitcase help your guests rest šŸ›ļø

Your spare room can still be your office too. We designed this one in 3D, with custom cabinetry for work and for guests and a colour palette chosen personally. It is about to be finished āœØ
