4AM lockout… and four very tired students who just wanted their beds 😴🔐
I was called out in the early hours to a top-floor flat where four students had found themselves locked out after the night latch wasn't engaging even with the key.
With everyone understandably exhausted, the priority was getting them back inside as quickly and safely as possible.
Using specialist letterbox equipment, I was able to gain non-destructive entry without damaging the door.
Once inside, the lock was checked and a fault was found with the cylinder/tailpiece operation, so the faulty cylinder was replaced to restore reliable use of the door.
A very sleepy group of customers finally got back into their flat — and hopefully straight to bed!
Emergency lockouts can happen at any hour, and we’ll always look for a non-destructive solution first wherever possible.

A quick note about emergency call-outs and cancellations.
At 5am on Sunday morning, I received an emergency call-out. I got up, got dressed, prepared my equipment and left home to attend.
Just as I reached the end of my street, the customer cancelled.
Because I had already been called out and had begun travelling, a cancellation fee applied. I reduced my normal cancellation fee as I was still close to home and sent a payment link immediately.
Unfortunately, despite a follow-up reminder, the fee remains unpaid and I have received no response.
I completely understand that circumstances can change and sometimes a locksmith is no longer required. What is disappointing is when the time, disruption and commitment involved in responding to an emergency call-out — particularly at 5am on a Sunday — is simply ignored.
As a small local business, every emergency call means stopping what I’m doing, getting ready, preparing tools and travelling to help someone who needs my assistance. Once that process has started, there is a genuine cost involved.
Going forward, I just ask that customers respect the cancellation policy in the same way I respect their time when responding quickly to an emergency.
Thank you to the vast majority of customers who are always understanding, respectful and appreciative of the service I provide.

Door or window not working properly? Don’t ignore the warning signs. 🔐
This week we’ve been out repairing a faulty window mechanism, replacing a door handle, and carrying out a lock replacement — three different jobs, all with one thing in common: a small fault can quickly become a much bigger problem if it’s left too long.
We can help with:
• Faulty window mechanisms
• Lock & handle repairs / replacements
• Stiff or difficult doors & windows
• uPVC & multipoint lock faults
If something doesn’t feel right when you open, close or lock your door or window, it’s worth getting it checked before it fails completely.

French doors back in use after more than 5 years 🔐

I was called out to a rented property where the keys to the rear French doors had been lost. The doors had remained locked and hadn’t been opened for over five years.
The existing lock was removed and replaced with a brand new APECS thumbturn cylinder, giving the tenant easy access from inside while keeping the door secure.
Because the doors had been unused for so long, I also cleaned and checked the door and locking mechanism, making sure everything was moving and operating smoothly before leaving.
A simple job, but a big improvement for the tenant — they can now make full use of the rear doors again.
If you have a door that hasn’t been used in years, a missing key, stiff mechanism or a lock that just isn’t working as it should, feel free to get in touch.

Late-night emergency lockout in Edinburgh 🔐

We were called out late last night after a customer accidentally left their keys in the mortice deadlock on the inside of the door — and the night latch locked behind them.
We arrived within around 30 minutes and first tried the usual non-destructive technique for opening a night latch.
This one was a high-security night latch, so the standard method wasn’t going to work.
Rather than drilling or damaging the lock, we used specialist letterbox equipment to carefully retrieve the customer’s keys from inside the property and bring them back through the letterbox.
Access gained, keys recovered, and no damage to the door or locks. ✅
Sometimes locksmithing really does feel a bit like Hook-a-Duck… only with keys! 🎣🔑
Whenever possible, we’ll always look for a non-destructive solution first before considering replacement or drilling.

Not every lockout needs a new lock.
We had an emergency call-out last night from a customer who had already contacted one of the large national locksmith companies advertising low-cost call-outs.
They attended and told the customer the lock would need to be replaced, with the total cost running into hundreds of pounds.
The customer decided not to go ahead and called us instead.
We arrived within 30 minutes and were able to gain entry quickly and non-destructively, with no damage to the door and no need to replace the existing lock.
The customer’s review afterwards says it best:
“John was a huge help! Locked ourselves out of the flat and he came within 30 minutes and got us back in with no damage to the door…”
This is exactly why I always try to use non-destructive entry methods first wherever possible.
Sometimes a lock really does need replacing — but sometimes it doesn’t.
If you’re locked out, it’s worth using a locksmith who will properly assess the situation before jumping straight to replacement.

Door getting harder to lock? Don’t ignore it!
We were recently contacted for an emergency call-out after a customer found themselves locked inside their top-floor flat with their young family.
The customer had already tried to investigate the issue themselves, which is why the handle had been removed when we arrived.
We managed to open the door non-destructively, then diagnosed the fault as a failed gearbox within the multipoint locking mechanism.
The faulty gearbox was removed and replaced, and the door was tested and returned to normal operation.
The important part of this job is what the customer told us afterwards:
The door had already been becoming harder to lock and the key more difficult to turn.
Those are often early warning signs that something in the locking system, alignment or gearbox is beginning to fail.
If the door had been checked when those symptoms first appeared, there’s a good chance the issue could have been dealt with before it became an emergency — potentially saving the customer the stress and cost of an emergency call-out.
If your UPVC or composite door is:
• Getting harder to lock
• Difficult to turn with the key
• Stiff when lifting the handle
• Not engaging smoothly
…it’s worth getting it checked before it fails completely.
