🔨 DEPOSITS – THERE’S TWO SIDES TO IT
There’s been a lot of talk recently online about new Government measures to crack down on “cowboy builders” and protect customers — and rightly so. Nobody wants to hand over their hard-earned money to someone who disappears or doesn’t do the job properly.
But I think there’s another side that sometimes gets forgotten.
Good, genuine tradespeople need protecting too.
When we take on a larger job, we’re committing our time, booking space in the diary, ordering materials, arranging labour and sometimes turning other work away.
That’s why, once a job is over a certain value, I believe asking for a reasonable deposit is completely fair.
A deposit isn’t about taking a customer’s money and hoping for the best. It’s about commitment from both sides.
The customer should have confidence that their tradesperson is going to turn up, do what’s been agreed and complete the work properly.
But equally, the tradesperson needs some confidence that the customer is committed to the job and isn’t going to cancel at the last minute after materials have been ordered, weeks that have been reserved or even worse knock them for the money right at the end. Which actually does happen.
Protect the customer. Protect genuine tradespeople. Keep everything transparent.
That’s how it should be. 🤝🔨
