🚨 STRUGGLING TO FIND LANDSCAPING WORKERS?

Finding reliable, skilled workers is becoming one of the biggest challenges facing landscaping, paving and groundworks businesses across the UK.

But are we looking in the right places?

We've put together a comprehensive UK Recruitment and Training Directory, covering experienced tradespeople, apprentices, school leavers, ex-forces personnel, career changers and people looking for a fresh start.

The guide includes useful contacts, training organisations and alternative recruitment routes that many businesses may never have considered.

🌍 GROUND MOVEMENT AND THE BRITISH WEATHER

ARE WE BLAMING PORCELAIN FOR PROBLEMS THAT START BENEATH THE PATIO? πŸ€”

Cracked joints, lifting slabs, failed patios and unhappy customers. But is porcelain really the problem, or are we overlooking something much bigger?

Following one of the hottest and driest summers we've experienced, reports of porcelain paving moving and joints failing have raised some interesting questions across the industry.

There's been plenty of discussion about thermal expansion, movement joints and installation methods, all of which are important. But I think we're missing another major part of the conversation.

What about the ground beneath the paving?

Anyone who's spent years working in this trade knows that ground conditions can make or break an installation, regardless of how expensive the paving is or how well it's been laid.

And after the weather we've experienced this year, I believe we need to look beyond the porcelain itself.

But there's another issue that concerns me even more, and that's the growing expectation that a porcelain patio should remain completely maintenance-free for the next 10, 15 or even 20 years.
Are we, as an industry, promising customers something that simply isn't achievable?

I've put together a more detailed article looking at ground movement, clay soils, extreme weather, porcelain paving failures and the expectations we're creating for customers.

🌿 FutureScape 2026 – A Fantastic Showcase for the UK Landscaping Industry! 🚜

What a fantastic couple of days at FutureScape 2026, held at the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre.

One of the UK's biggest events for the paving, landscaping and outdoor living industry, bringing together leading manufacturers, suppliers, contractors and industry professionals from across the country.

It was great to see so many familiar faces, meet new people and take a look at the latest products, materials, machinery and innovations coming into our industry.

From impressive exhibition stands and live demonstrations to new developments in paving and landscaping, there was plenty to see and some excellent ideas on display.

Events like FutureScape really highlight just how much our industry continues to develop, with manufacturers constantly improving products and introducing new solutions.

πŸŽ₯ I've put together a short video showing some of the highlights from my visit.

πŸ‘ A big thank you to everyone involved in organising the event and to all the exhibitors who made it such a success.

πŸ’¬ Did you attend FutureScape this year? What caught your eye, and were there any new products that particularly impressed you?

πŸ’§ PATIO DRAINAGE & FALLS – GET THE LEVELS RIGHT BEFORE YOU START πŸ“

You can lay the most expensive porcelain or natural stone perfectly, but if the falls and drainage are wrong, the patio is wrong.

A few basics worth remembering πŸ‘‡

πŸ“ FALLS

For patio paving, a minimum fall of 1:60 should be used to provide effective surface-water drainage β€” equivalent to approximately 16.7mm of fall per metre.

So approximately:

➑️ 1m = 17mm
➑️ 2m = 33mm
➑️ 3m = 50mm
➑️ 4m = 67mm
➑️ 5m = 83mm
➑️ 6m = 100mm

πŸ’‘ Work the total fall out BEFORE excavation β€” not when you start laying.

🏠 KEEP WATER AWAY FROM THE PROPERTY

Wherever possible, paving should fall away from the building towards a suitable drainage point.

Don't forget:

βœ… DPC levels
βœ… Door thresholds
βœ… Existing garden levels
βœ… Drainage outlets
βœ… Retaining walls
βœ… Finished paving levels

πŸ’¦ WHERE IS THE WATER GOING?

Creating a fall doesn't solve anything unless the water has somewhere suitable to go.

Depending on the site:

🌱 Lawn / soft landscaping
πŸ’§ Soakaway
πŸ”² Linear drainage
β• Gullies
🌿 Rain garden / SuDS solution
🧱 Permeable construction

And make sure the receiving ground can actually cope with the volume of water.

⚠️ BUILD THE FALL INTO THE JOB

Don't try to manufacture the entire gradient by altering mortar-bed thickness.

Set your levels correctly and carry the fall through:

Sub-grade ➑️ Sub-base ➑️ Laying course ➑️ Paving

Falls are normally formed at sub-base/sub-grade level so subsequent construction layers remain reasonably consistent.

🌧️ REMEMBER HOW MUCH WATER YOU'RE DEALING WITH

A 50mΒ² patio receiving 20mm of rain = around 1,000 litres of water.

That's a tonne of water that needs managing.

❌ COMMON MISTAKES

❌ Patio laid dead level
❌ Insufficient fall
❌ Water directed towards the house
❌ Channels installed with nowhere to discharge
❌ Patio drains straight onto already saturated clay
❌ Runoff directed towards neighbouring property
❌ DPC and thresholds ignored
❌ Drainage considered AFTER excavation

🎯 THE GOLDEN RULE

Before you dig, answer one question:

πŸ’§ WHERE IS THE WATER GOING TO GO?

Once you know that, you can calculate your falls and set the entire patio out around the drainage strategy.

Good paving starts with good groundwork β€” and good drainage starts with getting the levels right. πŸ‘Œ

πŸ“’ GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES NEW CRACKDOWN ON COWBOY BUILDERS & ROGUE TRADERS

The Government has today announced new measures aimed at tackling cowboy builders and protecting homeowners having building and home improvement work carried out.

This is something that could be particularly relevant to members of UK Paving Talk Group, as many businesses within the group carry out not only paving and landscaping, but also groundwork and general building work.

From September, a new Government-supported scheme is due to be introduced to help homeowners identify trusted traders.

Businesses signing up to the Approved Code will be expected to meet higher standards covering customer service, transparency and dispute resolution.

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a new payment protection system, where customers' money can be protected and payments released in stages as agreed milestones of the project are completed.

The Government says the intention is not only to protect homeowners, but also to support reputable contractors who are currently competing against rogue traders who undercut legitimate businesses.

According to the figures released today, more than 1 in 4 UK adults who had home improvement work carried out during the previous 18 months experienced problems. Of those, 37% incurred additional costs, losing an average of Β£750.

For genuine paving, landscaping and building contractors, the principle of removing cowboy operators from the industry is obviously difficult to argue against.

However, the important question will be how the scheme actually works in practice.

Will reputable established contractors benefit from it?

What will businesses have to do to become approved?

What will it cost?

How will staged or protected payments work when contractors need substantial upfront expenditure for materials?

And, most importantly, will it genuinely tackle rogue traders, or simply create another layer of administration for legitimate businesses already doing everything correctly?

This is something we'll be keeping an eye on as further details emerge.

πŸ‘‡ What do contractors in the group think?

Would you welcome an approved trader and protected payment system if it helped separate professional contractors from cowboy operators?

Or do you have concerns about how something like this could work in the paving, landscaping and building industries?
