Sometimes a house has so much potential. Lovely proportions, good-sized rooms, plenty of natural light, maybe even some beautiful original features.

Still, the layout just doesn’t work for how you want to live.

The kitchen feels cut off from the rest of the house, the dining room barely gets used, the hallway takes up too much space or you’ve got a lovely big living room but nowhere sensible to put the furniture.

It’s easy to start thinking that you need an extension to solve all these problems but that’s not always the case.

Sometimes you already have enough space, t’s not just arranged particularly well.

For example, removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room might give you the open-plan family space you’ve been wanting.

Moving a doorway could completely change how you can arrange your furniture.

A large hallway might have enough room to incorporate some much-needed storage, or an underused room could be given a completely different purpose.

Before spending tens of thousands of pounds (frankly, more likely a lot more than that) to extend, I think it’s worth looking at what you could achieve with the space you already have.

Sometimes you don’t need a bigger house, just a better layout.

This is one of the things I help families with at Ease Design Studio. Looking at how the rooms connect, where furniture and storage could go and whether changing the existing layout could make the home work better for everyday family life.

If you’ve recently moved into a house or you’re planning a renovation and aren’t sure what to do with the layout, get in touch. I’d love to hear what you’re planning.

I think a lot of people still associate hiring an interior designer with choosing colours, furniture and finishing touches.

Yes, that’s part of what we do, but there’s so much more we can help with, especially before construction even starts.

If you’re extending, renovating or building a new home, here are 5 things I can help you with:

✨Making sure the layout works for your family.

You might already have architectural plans, but have you thought about where all your furniture will go? Whether there’s enough room around your dining table or how you’ll move between the kitchen, living area and garden

✨Planning your kitchen properly.

Not necessarily choosing the exact kitchen cabinets just yet, but working out where the island, appliances, sink and storage should go

✨Working out where you need storage.

I don’t just mean having a few cupboards.

I’d look at what your family actually needs to store, where you use those things and how storage can be incorporated into the layout.

✨Thinking about the overall look of your home.

You don’t need to have every paint colour or piece of furniture chosen before building starts but having an idea of the overall style, flooring, materials and how you want different rooms to connect can help you make decisions as the project progresses.

✨Planning lighting and electrical points.

Once you know where your furniture, kitchen and built-in storage will go, you can start planning where you’ll need sockets, switches and lighting.

You don’t need every little detail decided before building starts, but thinking through these things early can save you from rushed decisions and expensive changes later.

This is what I help families with at Ease Design Studio, from reviewing architectural plans to developing layouts, storage and the overall interior concept.

When you’re planning an extension or building a new home, it’s easy to look at the floor plan and imagine how lovely all that extra space will be.

One thing I’d always recommend doing is checking the layout with actual furniture sizes.

I don’t just mean checking whether your sofa or dining table will physically fit in the room.

I mean whether there’s enough space to move around them comfortably and use the room the way you want to.

For example, you might have a lovely big open-plan kitchen, dining and living area on the plan.

However once you start adding furniture, you may realise:

* The dining table fits, but there’s barely enough room to pull the chairs out.

* The sofa fits, but it ends up blocking the route to the garden.

* You’ve planned beautiful bifold doors across the back, but now there’s nowhere sensible to put the TV.

* There’s enough space for a kitchen island, but not quite enough clearance to open the dishwasher while someone is standing at the sink.

None of these things are necessarily obvious when you’re looking at an empty floor plan.

Sometimes the solution is something quite simple, like moving a doorway, changing the position of a window or adjusting the proportions of two rooms.

Those changes are much easier to make while you are at a planning stage.

Your architect is looking at the building as a whole, but most of them won’t work through the detailed furniture layout and how you’ll use each space day to day.

That’s why I always think furniture, kitchen layouts and storage should be considered alongside the architectural plans, rather than at a later stage.

If you’re planning an extension or building a new home, and you’ve already got your architectural plans, this is exactly the sort of thing I can help you with.

Building your own home is exciting because you get to decide exactly how you want everything.

When you’re looking at floor plans, it’s easy to focus on room sizes and how lovely that open-plan kitchen will be.

What’s not always obvious on a 2D drawing is how those spaces will actually work for your family.

5 things I’d pay particular attention to.

1. Planning rooms without furniture
A room might look spacious on plan, but once you add a sofa, dining table or king-size bed, it can feel very different.
I’d always check furniture sizes and placement before finalising the layout. Sometimes moving a door or window slightly can give you much more usable space.

2. Not thinking enough about storage
Where will the hoover go? School bags, shoes, coats, toys?
I’d plan storage around what your family actually have, rather than trying to squeeze cupboards in wherever there’s space left.

3. Making the open-plan space too open
I love open-plan living, but if you’re cooking, eating, relaxing and entertaining in one room, you need to think about how those activities will work alongside each other.
Furniture placement, lighting and storage can all help create different areas within the space.

4. Not thinking about how you move around the house
Imagine a busy weekday. Everyone coming and going, shopping bags, school bags, dinner being prepared.
Does your layout make all of that easy?

5. Designing each room separately
You might have lots of lovely ideas saved on Pinterest, but have you thought about how they’ll work together? Flooring, colours, materials and built-in storage can help connect the rooms without making everything look the same.

The best thing about building from scratch is that you can think about all of this before the walls go up.

Your architect will be looking at the building as a whole, but it’s worth spending just as much time planning the furniture, storage and how your family will use the spaces every day.

That’s exactly what I help families with at Ease Design Studio.

If you’re building a new home and would like help with the layout, storage or overall interior design, get in touch. I’d love to hear what you’re planning.

Planning an extension to create an open plan space? I want to make sure it looks beautiful and works for your family.

It’s probably one of the things you’re most looking forward to about your extension.

A lovely big space where the whole family can spend time together but have you thought about how you’ll make it all work?

Where will the children play? How will you make the living area feel cosy? Where will everything be stored? How will you make sure the whole space flows naturally?

These are all things worth considering before the building work begins.

I help families plan and design their interiors, from optimising layouts and storage to choosing colours, materials and creating a cohesive look throughout.

Whether you need a consultation to talk through your plans or help developing the whole design, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.

Before you finalise your plans, think about what frustrates you in your current home.

The lack of storage? The awkward kitchen layout? The way everyone ends up getting in each other’s way?

Your new layout is an opportunity to address these things and make everyday family life a little easier.

A busy family homes need:

✨ Practical storage near the entrance for shoes, coats, school bags etc..
✨ Somewhere for the kids to do homework or play, close enough to keep an eye on them without getting in the way.
✨ A kitchen, dining and living area that flows well, with enough room for everyone to use the space comfortably.
✨ Thoughtful storage throughout the home, so everything has a place so it’s easier to keep things organised.

These are the things worth thinking about while your extension is at a planning stage, rather than wishing you’d done something differently once it’s finished.

I help families plan their layouts, interiors and storage before building work begins, making sure their new spaces work for everyday family life as well as looking beautiful.

It’s so easy to fall in love with a kitchen colour you’ve seen on Instagram or Pinterest.

However before you commit to it, have you thought about how it’s going to work with everything else in the room?

Especially if you’re planning an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, where all the different finishes and materials need to work together.

A few things I’d always consider:

1. Flooring
Your flooring is one of the largest surfaces in the room, so its colour and undertones can have a big impact on how your kitchen cabinetry looks. A warm oak floor, for example, will look very different next to a cool grey kitchen than a warmer neutral.

2. Worktops
The colour, pattern and finish of your worktop need to complement both the cabinetry and flooring. Even two beautiful materials can look quite busy when placed next to each other.

3. Wall colours
The same kitchen colour can look completely different depending on the wall colour around it and the natural light in the room.

4. Furniture and other finishes
If your kitchen is in the same space as your dining and living areas, think about your dining table, sofa, joinery and other materials too. They don’t all need to match, but they should feel like they belong together.

This is why I like to establish an overall design direction before choosing individual finishes.

A colour palette and a few carefully selected materials can help you see how everything will work together and make the decisions that follow much easier.

It doesn’t mean you need to have every single detail chosen but you need a clear idea of how you want your home to look and feel, so you’re not making every decision in isolation.

My client had her heart set on a double Belfast sink, ideally positioned under the kitchen window but there was a problem with the extension plans.

The wall where the sink made the most sense wasn’t quite long enough.

There was a soil pipe in the corner that they didn’t want to move, then a short section of wall, the window, another short section of wall and finally a large set of bifold doors.

With the soil pipe staying where it was, we needed to find another way to make the layout work.

My suggestion was to shift the bifold doors slightly and extend the section of wall alongside them.

That small change gave us the extra wall space needed to accommodate the double Belfast sink under the window, exactly where my client wanted it.

And she could still have her lovely bifold doors opening onto the garden.
This is exactly why I think it’s so important to plan the kitchen, furniture and storage alongside the architectural layout, rather than waiting until the extension is built.

Sometimes it’s not about making big changes to your plans. It’s about spotting those small adjustments that can make a real difference to the finished home.

If you’re planning an extension, make sure you’ve thought about what you want to fit inside it before finalising the position of your doors and windows.

Save this for when you’re reviewing your plans.
