If you've got some lovely root veg in this autumn, this is worth having in the shed!

It's a unique mix of bonemeal, feathermeal, blood meal, humic acid and micro-nutrients (trace elements), plus the addition of beneficial bacteria to ensure strong, healthy growth. Unlike other organic feeds that are mainly based on poultry manure, NutraNatural Garden Feed (high potash) will give a quick boost as well as providing a three month slow release feed, so plants are fed more effectively for longer.

This plant food comes in a clean and easy to handle 1mm prill, is virtually odour free and contains more readily available nutrients than many similar products.

Available with or without added sulphur too. Buy here: https://greenacresdirect.co.uk/Nutranatural-Garden-Feed-High-Potash.html

Let's talk about worms for a second πŸͺ±

Casting worms get much busier on the lawn once autumn turns cool and damp, and those little piles they leave behind can smother grass and turn mowing into a right mess. Here's the trick: they hate acidic soil, so our Sulphurlawn Chips or the spray-on version gently acidify the surface, nudging them to burrow a bit deeper without doing them any harm at all.

September to the end of November is your window, so there's still plenty of time to sort it. Buy here: https://greenacresdirect.co.uk/Lawncare/Worm-Control/

πŸ₯• Today is World Vegetarian Day, first marked by the North American Vegetarian Society back in 1977 and now the starting gun for Vegetarian Awareness Month right through October.

Whatever your usual plate looks like, there's something extremely satisfying about growing a bit of your own veg, and autumn's actually a good time to start: garlic, broad beans and winter salads can all go in now for next year's harvest. You don't need a huge plot either, a few pots on a patio will get you a decent crop of something. Vegetarian or not, we can all agree that veggies are fab and the best ones are the ones you've grown yourself!

Early October is still a working month rather than a winding down one! A few jobs for this week:

βœ‚οΈ - Cut back anything that's finished for the year - but leave some things with seeds or pretty structures
πŸ‚ - Keep on top of fallen leaves before they build up!
πŸͺ - Get any late feeding done while the soil's still workable.

A nice steady October beats a rushed November to put the garden to bed every time!

If you've got acid loving plants: camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries, autumn is worth a quick pH check. Soil that's drifted alkaline (common with hard tap water) makes it much harder for these plants to take up iron and other nutrients, whatever else you feed them. We have a fabulous feed for these type of plants and also a hard tap water amender!

We know, we know! It's only just autumn today! But, the garden doesn't wait and now is the perfect time to start thinking of the garden ahead 🌱

Next month is peak bulb planting time, and having the right tools and a good bulb fibre underneath makes all the difference to how they establish, especially if you have heavy clay soil. A free draining bulb fibre stops bulbs sitting in wet soil over winter, which is the single biggest cause of rot. We've got a full guide going up on the blog shortly on exactly how to plant them for a natural, drift style display rather than neat rows, so keep an eye out.

Not every job this autumn is about tidying up. Leaving seedheads standing gives birds a food source right through winter, and a simple log pile tucked into a quiet corner becomes a home for beetles, hedgehogs and overwintering insects. A garden that looks a little wilder in September is doing more good than one cut back to bare soil.

What beautiful structures are you leaving standing this year?

Whilst it's true that moss provides a vital job in the eco-system of earth, having big patches of it on your lawn isn't ideal! πŸ˜…

Autumn is when moss really starts to take hold, cooler temperatures, more moisture and shorter days all favour it over our lovely grass. If you've noticed it creeping in around shady or damp corners, now is the time to deal with it, not next spring when it's spread to all corners.

Our moss control Nutra-Iron Spray-on treats the problem while the lawn's still in its best growing window to recover and thicken up!

Empty pots after the summer bedding's finished can be one of the saddest sights in a garden, and completely avoidable!

Cyclamen or pansies planted now will give you months of colour, heathers for texture that can shrug off frost, ornamental cabbages for something architectural, and perhaps some spring bulbs tucked underneath as a bonus for later on 🌷

You can also pop in one of our Bags Of Goodness and feed the whole lot all season: https://greenacresdirect.co.uk/Bags-of-Goodness.html
