ART AT & ABOUT WHERE LAND MEETS THE SEA

An exhibition at Hastings Contemporary looks at the very kind of landscape the gallery itself is sited on, where the land meets the sea. Located on the Sussex town’s beach, the gallery presents a group presentation exploring the conditions of the coast. Comprising film, painting, installation & a range of other projects from over 30 artists, the show questions how earth turns to sea & how we humans relate to the threshold.

The edge of land has always attracted us humans. Whether that’s the soft-underfoot sand of a relaxing day at the beach or the sudden and violent moment land becomes cliff becomes sea, it is a boundary that draws us. It is also a place entwined with politics, especially so currently in the UK as racists watch the coast for dinghies in a desperate attempt to stop outsiders from elsewhere coming onto the land.

A new exhibition at Hastings Contemporary, suitably a gallery literally constructed on the beach, seeks to explore through culture the conditions of that landscape moment when earth becomes water. An OS map might use a solid line to demark the waterline, but it’s far more nuanced, rich, and complicated than such a binary construct. Edge: Where the Land Meets the Sea is a show of works by 33 artists that seeks to start a cultural discussion around that nuance.

TEN HIGHLIGHTS FROM BERLIN ART WEEK 2026

A vast & layered city like Berlin can be hard to navigate for the cultural visitor, with institutions, non-profits, and commercial galleries scattered widely. Thankfully, each year the city organises Berlin Art Week with over 100 organisations opening for exhibitions, events, and parties. We went along to find out what’s happening in the German capital’s art scene.

One year ago, we visited Berlin to explore the city’s vast Art Week festival. In fact, it was so good we had to return for the 2026 edition. Over five September days, more than 100 galleries, project spaces, and private collections put on exhibitions, talks, events, and celebrations. From huge institutions to tiny gallery spaces – and even a building site – welcomed Berliners and international visitors to relish in the cultural breadth of the city.

This year marks 15 years of the annual event, and it’s as big as ever. In fact, there was far too much for recessed.space to explore, but we had a pretty good go at squeezing in as much as we could. Here, we distill the festival into ten highlights.

CONTOUR BIENNALE IN BELGIUM & MECHELEN’S CREATIVE RENAISSANCE

Dedicated to the arts of the moving image, Contour Biennale has been running in the Flanders city of Mechelen since 2003. It has recently been relaunched by a local collective of individuals & institutions, so Will Jennings visited to explore the city through the moving image festival.

There is no shortage of cultural biennials. The most celebrated may be Venice, but cities and regions across the world use the format – for good and bad – for a variety of reasons. The Biennial Foundation’s website currently lists 304 with an interactive map clearly showing that Europe greatest densities of biennials of any global region.

So, it may not have been noticed when Contour Biennial, running in the Belgian city of Mechelen began to stutter away from the two-year model. Founded in 2003, it ran in the traditional rhythm until 2019, after which four years passed before the 10th edition. When the 11th didn’t appear in 2025 it may have been thought that the final edition had taken place, but local institutions and creatives were busy strategising a new future, one rooted in collectivism, community, and opening up the city to contemporary art.

THE THIRD FLOOR AT CASA BATLLÓ: GAUDÍ REDISCOVERED

The celebrated Antoni Gaudí architecture of Casa Batlló on Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia has gradually been restored and opened up to the public. The latest space is the Third Floor, where conservationists have discovered historic details now offering a backdrop to contemporary design.

Recently, we visited Casa Batlló to see a unique exhibition, with the works of Joan Miró and Joaquim Gomis presented within the contextual surroundings of Antoni Gaudí’s incredible architecture. While there, we also popped into the newly-re-opened Third Floor to see how the grand residential building is reinventing its history for the future.
