After mating both snails will lay 40 to 80 eggs usually hidden underneath something in a shallow hole on the ground. Each egg can hatch into a tiny snail after about four weeks. The snail shell grows with snail's body grows and takes about two years to reach adult size.

rick Or Treat Bees 👻🐝🎃
When this little bumble comes knocking at the door it's tricks she is offering not treats. She is a cuckoo bee and although she looks like a bumblebee and sounds like a bumblebee she is in fact a trickster. Cuckoo bees lie their way into the host's nest and then lay their own eggs.

This Red-tailed cuckoo bee (Bombus rupestris) cleverly tricks the real red-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius) into raising its young for them, meaning they have no need to collect pollen or bother with workers, the host colony do all that for them - much like the cuckoo bird.
👻🐝🎃
Don’t get too hung up on their dark side though, they are important pollinators too and when present, an excellent indicator that the host species is doing well. In fact cuckoos would be the first to disappear when host numbers really begin dwindle.
👻🐝🎃
Let's hope that never happens - that really is a scary thought for Halloween.

Pumpkin spider 🕷🎃 Look out for this unusual Orb Weaver spider (Araneus marmoreus), commonly called the Pumpkin spider due to the female’s large orange abdomen. October is a great time for a spider hunt to get you into the mood for Halloween 👻

Hedgehogs Need Our Help 🦔
British hedgehogs are in threat of extinction, numbers of these once common creatures have fallen due to habitat loss, we can help by providing a friendly environment such as easy access to our gardens, food and places to rest and nest. Hedgehogs are fast on their feet and can travel long distances and are by nature nocturnal, so you seldom see them during the day.

How To Make Your Garden Hedgehog Friendly 🦔
- Hedgehogs make nests lined with moss in sheltered sites under dense hedges or brambles, where they will hibernate and sleep through the winter months.
- Always check under hedges and in long grass for wildlife before using a strimmer.
- If you have hedgehogs in your vicinity, you can help them by putting out food such as dried kitten biscuits and fresh water.
- A CD sized hole (13cm) at the base of a fence or 'hedghog highway' allows hogs to pass freely in search of food or a mate.
- Insect friendly habitats such as log piles and wildflowers will encourage their favourite food - beetles!
- Don't use slug pellets, which are poisonous, not only to slugs but to the birds and small mammals that eat them.

Homes For Beetles
A simple addition to a garden that will encourage and attract important wildlife that need our help.

A log pile, old stump or log pyramid left to rot down is a fantastic way to help the rare stag beetle which needs rotting wood for the larvae to feed on. We have three types of Stag beetle in the UK the rarest is the large antlered (Lucanus cervus).

The Rhinoceros and Longhorn beetles are also wood borers and need dead wood to feed their larvae. A log pile or log pyramid will also encourage other beetles like the Snail Hunter (Cychrus caraboides), which lives under rotting wood and you guessed it, eats snails.

Beetles in turn are the favourite food of hedgehogs!
