We love seeing your projects when they’re finished, but honestly, we love seeing the bit in between even more ❤️

After all, the finished result is only half the story isn’t it?

Behind every compliment from your neighbours is a lot of love, time and hard work.

The early starts, the paint splattered trainers, the bits you thought would take five minutes that somehow take half an hour and checking the forecast constantly to see if you might be able to get another coat on.

Cumbria doesn’t really do gentle rain, it comes in sideways and stay around for weeks at a time, putting pressure on exterior walls 🌦️

Most people assume that as long as the rain is kept out, the wall is fine. But, It’s not quite that simple.

Exterior walls hold moisture and if that has nowhere to go, it sits there causing damage long before anything shows on the surface of your home.

The real goal should be to let the wall breathe from the inside, while keeping rain out from the outside. Together, that keeps a home dry and protected properly 🙌

We looked at 23 masonry paint brands to see what sits behind the claims and the results raise an important question: is there evidence to back up how long your paint is expected to last?

Because when you’re spending time and money painting your home, you shouldn’t have to take a claim at face value.

How much do you really know about your masonry paint?

Our recent review looked at the breathability claims made by masonry paint brands/products in the UK and found a clear gap between making the claim and providing the evidence behind it.

With only a proportion of products providing measurable breathability data or recognised testing, it’s worth looking beyond the label.

Because when it comes to your walls, breathability shouldn’t just be something you’re asked to take on trust.

Weather is one of the biggest challenges your exterior walls face, which is why water resistance is such an important part of masonry paint performance.

But there’s a big difference between saying a paint is water resistant and showing how well it actually keeps water out.

Our research found that while water protection was claimed across every masonry paint we looked at, only 4% provided a water absorption reduction figure to demonstrate performance.

So, when you see words like water resistant, water repellent or weatherproof, it’s worth asking: what’s the evidence?
