Five slides, five real mistakes, all of them avoidable.

The first is placement. Linen belongs on duvet covers, fitted sheets, pillowcases and sheer curtains, where its open weave filters light and moves air. It is a poor fit for blackout curtains, where that same open weave lets the morning through, and it wears too soon on high-traffic upholstery.

The fibre itself is the reason. Flax is hollow, which is precisely why it pulls moisture away from the skin and releases it back into the air. Stack a heavy, moisture-trapping layer on top and you cancel linen's single greatest advantage.

Then there is the wash. Hot cycles stiffen the weave and shorten the life of the cloth. A short, cool, gentle wash is all linen asks for.

Heat does the rest of the damage in the dryer. High heat is the fastest route to shrinkage and fibre breakdown, so line dry or keep the setting low, and straighten your seams before the cloth sets.

And the creases. Linen creases because of how the flax fibre behaves. That texture is the character of the cloth, and ironing it flat will not hold.
