How to spot a cowboy tree surgeon vs. a qualified arborist... 🤠🤨We’ve been called out to a few "rescue missions" lately. It turns out, letting a bloke with a chainsaw and no credentials tackle your garden usually ends in tears (and a very sad-looking tree). If you're trying to figure out if you've hired a pro or a cowboy, here is a quick guide:❌ The Cowboy: Leaves your tree looking like a giant toilet brush.✅ Us: Prunes for the long-term health, safety, and natural shape of the tree.❌ The Cowboy: "Insurance? Yeah mate, pretty sure my car covers it."✅ Us: Carries full Public Liability Insurance (and we’re happy to show you the paperwork).❌ The Cowboy: Drops a two-tonne branch directly onto your greenhouse.✅ Us: Uses precise rigging, ropes, and actual physics to lower branches safely.❌ The Cowboy: Disappears the moment the tea and biscuits run out, leaving a mountain of mess.✅ Us: Rakes, sweeps, and cleans up every single leaf before we leave the driveway.Did your last tree surgeon leave your garden looking like a disaster zone?We can't magically grow the branches back overnight, but we can fix the structural damage, save the tree's health, and restore your garden's dignity.Drop us a message or call today for a quote from a team that actually knows their ash from their elbow. 🌲👇WhatsApp 07562 113 405 AB's Trees

⚠️ SOOTY BARK DISEASE: Safe Sycamore Removal in Cottam! ⚠️
The team at AB’s Trees and Ground Maintenance was out in Cottam, Preston this week handling a challenging dismantle of a mature Sycamore tree. Unfortunately, this tree had succumbed to Sooty Bark Disease—a destructive fungal infection that has been spreading across Lancashire due to hot, dry summer spells.
# # 🔍 What is Sooty Bark Disease?
It is a fungal infection (Cryptostroma corticale) that targets Sycamores. It causes hyper-rapid crown dieback, brittle wood, and a distinct layer of black, powdery spores beneath peeling bark.
# # 🛑 Why It Needs Professional Intervention:

* Brittle Wood: Infected branches become extremely unstable and prone to snapping unexpectedly.
* Health Hazard: The airborne black spores can cause serious respiratory irritation (alveolitis) if inhaled without professional PPE.
* High-Risk Dismantles: As you can see from our climber's-eye view, removing trees in tight residential areas near roads and properties requires precision rigging and expert climbing.

# # 🪵 Our Process:
We carefully dismantled the crown piece-by-piece, utilizing advanced rigging techniques to protect nearby structures. Every bit of infected timber was safely processed into our tipper to contain the spores and keep the neighbourhood safe.

Why We Can’t Quote Your Tree Work From a Photo! 📸🌳

We love it when you reach out with photos of your trees, but did you know we always need to visit your property to give you an accurate, final quote?

Some people worry that an in-person visit is just a high-pressure sales tactic—but that is not how we work!

With almost 30 years in the industry, our site visits are about giving you honest, completely free professional advice so you can make the right choice for your property. Here is why a quick look at a picture isn’t quite enough for an accurate price:
🚶‍♂️ Access & Logistics: We need to see how we will get our heavy machinery, chippers, and trucks near the tree. Can we fit through the side gate? How far do we have to carry the timber?
⚠️ Hidden Hazards: Photos don't always show overhead power lines, telephone cables, nearby glass greenhouses, or underground pipes that we need to plan around.
🩺 Tree Health & Safety: A tree might look fine in a picture, but an in-person look allows us to check for hidden decay, structural splits, or fungal diseases. This completely changes how we safely climb or dismantle the tree.
⚖️ The Legal Stuff: We always check if your tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or if you live in a Conservation Area. We look after the local council paperwork so you don't face unexpected fines. With nearly three decades of experience, we guarantee a fair, accurate price with zero sales pressure and zero surprises on the day.👇 Need some tree work done?Drop us a message or call [07562 113 405 ] to book your free, no-obligation expert consultation.

This potential customer wanted this tree TOPPING by 60% to allow more sunlight 😩
Which will certainly kill the birch slowly as a species that doesn't compartmentalize as well as other species

My suggestion was to reduce all round by 10-15% 👍

Crown raise canopy to allow light under the tree 👍

30% canopy thin to allow sunlight to pass through from above. 👍
