We’re delighted to see the wonderful Kilbeg development recognised with another award!

Our partners at have won the Community Impact Award – Small/Medium at The Scottish Impact Awards 2026, recognising their exceptional contribution to Gaelic language, culture and communities across the Highlands and Islands.

Kilbeg is a project we’re incredibly proud to have been part of. Working in partnership with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, R.HOUSE delivered new homes designed to support a thriving, Gaelic-speaking community here on Skye.

It’s been particularly exciting to see the interest Kilbeg is generating further afield, including a recent visit from the Irish Taoiseach. The relationship between housing, language and retaining people in rural communities is very much part of the conversation in Ireland’s Gaeltacht too, making the story of Kilbeg especially relevant.

A huge congratulations to everyone at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, and to Norman Gillies – himself the proud owner of an R.HOUSE, pictured receiving the award.

It’s wonderful to see this very special Skye project continuing to make an impact, both at home and beyond.

THE BEAUTY OF THE ORDINARY - R.HOUSE Inspiration (Our DNA)

They weren’t trying to be beautiful.
Barns, byres, sheds and steadings were built to work. Simple forms, practical materials, shaped by the land, the weather and what they needed to do.

But there’s something really beautiful in that simplicity.

The familiar pitched roofs. Timber, stone and corrugated metal. Good proportions. Nothing unnecessary. Nothing for show. These ordinary buildings, dotted across the Scottish landscape, have always been a source of inspiration for R.HOUSE.
Not because we want to recreate them, but because there’s a lot we can learn from them.

Use materials honestly. Respond to the landscape. Keep things simple. Only add what has a reason to be there.

We take those ideas and think about what they mean for how we live now — warm, light-filled spaces, open-plan living, framed views and a connection to what’s outside.

Good architecture doesn’t always need to shout.

Sometimes there’s real beauty in the ordinary.

šŸ Handover day on Skye šŸ

We were delighted to hand over this four bedroom R.HOUSE RS4 on the Isle of Skye today, to a lovely young family starting their new life here.

They’re putting down roots, learning Gaelic and looking forward to becoming part of the island community, exactly the kind of happy handover we love.

And what a wee Tardis the RS4 is!

From the outside, it’s pretty unassuming. Inside? Four bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, family bathroom all made possible by this super space stair in the central core. A proper family home on a really efficient footprint.

Even better, planning was approved in September 2025 and just over a year later, this new timber frame home on Skye is finished and we’re handing over the keys.

Our new homeowners are camera shy, so you’ll have to make do with the house… luckily, it scrubs up pretty well!

Wishing them all the very best for their new home and life on Skye.

Mòran taing & fĆ ilte dhachaigh! (Hopefully my Gaelic is correct, I'm sure Tormod will correct me! šŸ˜‰)

šŸ We’re on site at Strathcarron! šŸ

And, very excitingly, the first houses are up.

Work is now underway on the community housing part of the site, bringing new homes for local people, and it’s brilliant to finally see the first two standing.

Yesterday’s weather was also doing a very good job of showcasing the more rugged side of Highland living… But even a suitably dreich day couldn’t take the shine off it.

Alongside the community housing, we also have a number of private plots available at Strathcarron, and we’ll be holding an Open Day on Friday 16th October.

Come along, have a look around, see what’s happening and find out more about building your own R.HOUSE here.

More details coming soon, but if you’d like to join us, drop us a message and we’ll keep you posted.

šŸ”šŸ”‘Handover day šŸ”šŸ”‘

It’s always an exciting day when we get to hand over the keys to our lovely clients. You build such a lovely relationship along the way.
And this one felt extra special.

This young lady has moved heaven and earth to make this happen — and she’s done it on her own.

R is one of the many single ladies who have trusted us to help them build their home. Taking on a self-build is a big thing. Doing it on your own takes guts, determination and a fair bit of trust in the people you choose to do it with.

She’s spent the last few months living and working in her camper with her two dogs, so I think that first night in her R.HOUSE is going to feel VERY good!

I made R take these photos under duress (sorry), but I will share a few of her lovely words about the team:

ā€œR.HOUSE have been so incredibly pleasant and supportive… there is no doubt that this has helped me not to lose faith and energy for the project.

I can’t wait to have space, warmth and the amazing views, knowing I’ve made the most sustainable choices I could.ā€

There may have been a few tears at handover. Me included. Shhh… don’t tell the team I’m actually a softy at heart!

Enjoy that first long soak in the bath, you’ve earned it.

Here’s to a wonderful new chapter on Skye for this lovely lady and her dogs. You did it! ā¤ļø

Thinking about building your own home in the Scottish Highlands? Come along and have a chat with Danielle and Lisa, who’ll be there to answer your questions about self build, R.HOUSE.

Our very own architect, Steven, will also be presenting a seminar on self build in the Scottish Highlands; taking a thorough look at what you need to consider when building in a rural context, including the latest policy framework, planning considerations and regulations.

Most importantly, he’ll explore how you can still 'Make Your Home Here' and create a home that works for you, your site and its surroundings.

Whether you already have a plot, are searching for land, or are simply starting to explore the idea of building your own home in Scotland, come and say hello.

Tickets are free — and you all know we love to chat.

See you there!

Whilst we’re on things you can add to your R.HOUSE…

Let’s chat stoves. šŸ”„

It’s getting to that time of year when you might actually want to put one on. There may have been a heatwave down south, but we never saw much evidence of it here in Skye.

Now, your R.HOUSE definitely doesn’t need a stove. With all that insulation, underfloor heating and an air source heat pump — all standard in our turnkey package (You’ll be plenty cosy without one).

But… we all love a stove.

Perfect for a winter’s day. Or a Tuesday in August, when the Highland weather does what Highland weather does.

Stove on. Wee book. Favourite tipple. Lovely.

And yes, we can absolutely add one to your R.HOUSE. We’ve even taken the guesswork out of that and picked options that work with the house, both technically and in terms of style.

Would you add a stove to yours?

You might have spotted us in a recent issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland. If not, you can get it online, at your nearest newsagent, in the shops or, if you’re lucky, through your door.

OK, plug over.

Anyway… there’s a lovely picture of one of our timber frame homes with some stone cladding, which made us think, we really should tell you all that this is an option.

So, here we are. Telling you.

As you know, our houses take their inspiration from the old byres and barns you see dotted around the Highland landscape. And what better way to make your R.HOUSE feel properly rooted in its rural surroundings than by adding some local stone?

We think it looks pretty great.

It adds texture, breaks up the timber and helps a new home feel like it really belongs in the landscape, particularly when you’re building in the Scottish Highlands or a rural setting.

And we don’t just chuck it on anywhere and hope for the best. Our architects will work with you to figure out where the stone should go, how much to use and how it works with the rest of the house.

And voilĆ .

A contemporary, architect-designed Highland home that looks like it might just have always been there.
