This looks like a group of strangers enjoying lunch by the river. In fact, almost everyone here was a friend of Renoir. And one of them was about to change his life. 🐶

The scene takes place on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant on the Seine at Chatou, west of Paris, popular with boaters.

Look at the bottom left: the young woman in the flowered hat, cuddling a little dog. Her name was Aline Charigot, a seamstress. She married Renoir in 1890, and they had three sons.

Many other faces have been identified. The man sitting backwards on his chair, bottom right, is the painter Gustave Caillebotte. The woman drinking in the middle is the actress Ellen Andrée. In the background, the man in the top hat is the collector Charles Ephrussi.

Decades later, the American collector Duncan Phillips bought the painting in 1923 for 125,000 dollars, a huge sum at the time. It is still the star of the Phillips Collection in Washington.

A lunch with friends, and a future wife at the table. 💍
