Day 136 — OEM vs ODM: What new sellers should actually focus on first 🏭

Getting a lot of questions on this, so let's simplify it:
🔹 OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) = you design the product, manufacturer just produces it to your specs

🔹 ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) = manufacturer already has the design/product ready, you just white-label it with your brand

Our honest advice for new sellers: start with white labeling (ODM). Don't jump straight into your own production or custom manufacturing.

Why? Because white labeling lets you:

✅ Test the market with lower upfront cost
✅ Focus your energy on selling, marketing, and understanding customers
✅ Avoid the risk and capital lock-in of custom production before you even know if the product will sell

Once your white-labeled product starts selling in good, consistent numbers — THAT'S your signal to move toward your own production (OEM), better customization, and building a stronger brand identity.
Don't reverse this order. Prove the demand first with white labeling, then invest in your own production once you have real sales data backing your decision.

Day 135 — The 3-3-3 mindset every new seller needs 🧠⏳

We see it all the time: people enter e-commerce expecting to become millionaires within 3 months. Reality doesn't work like that, and honestly, that mindset sets people up for disappointment and quitting too early.

Here's the realistic timeline we believe in:

📍 First 3 months = pure learning. Not profit-focused. Understanding the ecosystem, tools, listings, pricing — this is your foundation phase.
📍 First 3 years = your testing ground. This is where you find out if this business is actually right for you. You'll face ups, downs, losses, small wins, frustrating months — this phase tests your patience and consistency, not your luck.
📍 Once you survive those 3 years — showing up, adapting, learning from every mistake — THAT'S when the real rewards typically start showing up. The next phase becomes about scaling and reaping what you built.

This business isn't a 90-day lottery ticket. It's a long game that rewards people who can handle uncertainty without quitting.

If you're in your first few months and it feels hard — that's not failure. That's exactly where you're supposed to be.

Day 134 — Is there a "right way" to source a product? Honestly, no. 🤷

A lot of people ask us this, and here's our honest answer: there's no single "correct" sourcing method. It depends on your budget, your product, and your stage in the business.

A few real things we've learned:

📍 Start with market research — actually go to wholesale markets, understand pricing, quality tiers, and vendors in person. Don't skip this step.
📍 Don't jump straight to sourcing from China unless you have a solid budget and understand the process. A lot of beginners do this too early, and their shipment gets stuck in customs — money blocked, stress high, and zero product in hand to show for it.
📍 Approach sourcing in a way that's actually feasible for YOUR current stage — not what looks impressive on paper.
📍 Set realistic profit expectations. Sometimes the goal isn't ₹500 profit per unit — it's ₹100 profit, but sold across 1 lakh units. Volume can matter more than per-unit margin, especially early on.

There's no shortcut here. It's research, patience, and matching your sourcing strategy to your actual capacity — not chasing the "ideal" method you saw someone else use.

Day 133 — Why we avoid seasonal products as new sellers 🎋📉

Today's lesson: as a new e-commerce seller, avoid jumping into seasonal products — at least until you understand the game fully.

Here's why: sellers who are experienced in seasonal business (Rakhi, festival-specific items, etc.) know exactly WHEN to start, how much inventory to stock, and how to manage returns if things don't sell through. That timing knowledge comes from experience — and it's the most critical part.

Seasonal products follow a predictable pattern: search volume spikes hard around the festival/occasion, then drops sharply right after. If you're new and don't time this correctly:

⚠️ You might stock too early or too late
⚠️ Your inventory money gets blocked in unsold stock
⚠️ Returns pile up once the season ends and demand disappears
⚠️ You're stuck holding stock nobody wants anymore
For someone new to this business, this is a risky way to start. Seasonal products need precision timing that comes from experience — something you build over time, not something you should bet your early capital on.

Our advice: master a non-seasonal, consistent-demand product first. Understand the ecosystem. THEN consider seasonal products once you know how to time it right.

Save this before you consider the stocking festival/seasonal items

Day 132 — The profit illusion: Margin vs Cash Flow 💸🔄

A lot of new sellers make this mistake: source at ₹100, sell at ₹400, and assume they're making great money. Then a few months in, they realize — there's barely any actual cash in hand.

The real issue isn't margin. It's cash flow rotation.
Here's what we mean: it's not just about how much profit you make per unit — it's about how many times you can rotate that capital in a given period. The more times your money cycles through (source → sell → get paid → reinvest → repeat), the more real money you actually generate.

For India-sourced, India-sold products: aim for at least 7-8x cash flow rotation.

For products sourced from outside India (like China): aim for at least 4-5x rotation, since the cycle naturally takes longer (shipping, customs, etc.)

Here's the key insight: the sellers who are actually successful in this business often don't have the highest margins — they have excellent cash rotation speed. Fast rotation + decent margin beats slow rotation + high margin, almost every time.

Don't just calculate profit per unit. Calculate how fast your money is moving.

Day 131 — Why we chose "break-even" over "profit" for our first 200 units 📊

A pattern we see with a lot of new sellers: they want to be profitable from Day 1. We personally believe that's the wrong approach — and here's why.
For your first 200 units, aim for break-even pricing.

Even if it means bearing a small loss, that's okay. Here's the logic:

When you price low early on, you attract more buyers who are willing to "give you a chance" — even without a strong review history. Once they try your product and like it, word-of-mouth kicks in, and repeat buyers or referrals start coming naturally.

Compare that to pricing high right away — buyers will simply choose competitors who already have strong reviews and sales history. Why would they take a risk on a new, unproven, higher-priced seller?

Our approach: absorb the smaller loss/break-even on the first 200 units. Once you're past that stage, aim for a small profit — even ₹50 per unit — on the next 2 lakh units. That's the model that builds real visibility, trust, and long-term sustainability.

This isn't about being cheap forever. It's about earning your place in the market first, then scaling profit gradually.

Day 130 — The math mistake that ruins new sellers 🧮
Source at ₹100. List at ₹400. Sell it. Is ₹300 your profit?

NO. And this misunderstanding is one of the biggest reasons new sellers get a shock when they actually calculate their real earnings.

Here's what actually eats into that ₹300 before it becomes profit:
💸 GST
💸 Platform commission/fees
💸 Shipping charges
💸 Packaging costs
None of these are optional. None of these are small. Together, they can eat a significant chunk of what you thought was your margin.

This is exactly why understanding your TRUE cost breakdown — not just sourcing price vs selling price — is non-negotiable before you enter e-commerce.

Before you even list a product, sit down and calculate:
✅ Sourcing cost
✅ GST %
✅ Platform fee %
✅ Shipping cost per unit
✅ Packaging cost per unit
✅ THEN see what's actually left as profit
Most people skip this step and only realize the reality after a few months of "sales" that aren't translating into real money in hand.

Save this before you price your next product

Day 129 — The pricing rule that determines if you survive festival sales 💰

Today's lesson: your product should have at least 60-70% gross margin. Not optional — essential.

Here's why this number matters so much: during festival seasons (Diwali, Big Billion Days, Great Indian Festival etc.), you'll see intense price competition. Sellers drop prices aggressively, platforms push offers and deals, and there's real, healthy competition to give customers the best price.

If your margin is thin from the start, you simply cannot participate in these events — and festival sales are often when the biggest volume happens.

But if you're sitting on a solid 60-70% margin:
✅ You can afford to offer discounts during platform sales events
✅ You can participate in deals/coupons without going into loss
✅ Platforms tend to push participating sellers higher in visibility
✅ Higher visibility = higher chance of increased sales
Low margin = you sit out the biggest sales opportunities of the year.

Healthy margin = you compete, participate, and grow.
Build your pricing with festival season in mind from day one — not after you realize you can't compete.

Day 128 — TM vs ® — a difference that can save your account 🛡️

Most new sellers apply for a trademark and think they're protected once they get the TM symbol. Reality check: TM = temporary/pending mark. It's still in process. ® = registered — that's when you get real, enforceable protection.

Here's the problem with just having a TM: your listing is still vulnerable to mapping. We showed a real example in today's video — someone else attaches to your listing and starts selling their own product on it. You maintain quality, you set your price, and someone else jumps in at a lower price, hijacking the same listing you built.

It's frustrating, and worse — it can directly damage your account health and performance metrics over time.

The fix isn't complicated, but it requires being proactive:
✅ Understand TM vs ® before you assume you're protected
✅ Monitor your listing constantly, even with a TM
✅ If mapping happens, be ready to modify your listing (images, title, bullet points) to break the copy-paste pattern
✅ Push toward full registration (®) as fast as possible

Prepare BEFORE you start selling — not after the damage is done. That's the real lesson here.

Save this if you're new to Amazon/Flipkart and haven't sorted your trademark yet
