Sound · City · People

MSCTY is a Tokyo-based creative studio and platform exploring how sound and listening shape the way we experience music, culture, place, and everyday life.

Founded by broadcaster, curator, and sound artist Nick Luscombe Nick Luscombe FRSA - Sound + Space Japan , MSCTY is led by a core team in Japan and the UK, collaborating with a global network of artists and creative partners. Nick’s three decades of work across Japanese music and culture underpin a studio practice that MSCTY has developed over the past 16 years.

We work with artists, architects, designers, researchers, and cultural organisations to create sound experiences, cultural programmes, and creative strategies - work that helps people listen more closely to the places they live in, and to each other.

Japan is where we start, but the questions are universal: how might we listen differently to the world around us, and what happens to a place, a brand, or a life, when sound is treated as seriously as everything we can see?

In July we brought our Sonic Minds project, developed in partnership with Wonderfruit festival, to Europe, with a series of live performances, talks, and playback events.

Starting with a listening and talk event at Spiritland in London focused on Japanese ambient music, we then gave a well received European premiere of Music for Rest Rooms to a full house at Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, accompanied with visuals from Hiraki Sawa, and two days later again performed it in the incredible architecture of Brighton’s oldest building - Saint Nicholas’ Church - which resonated and responded to the music to give an incredible sense of space and scale. We also performed selections from Yumiko’s landmark 1987 album Resonance, live in Europe for the first time.

A talk at Japan House London shared our live video of Music for Restrooms at Wonderfruit’s immersive Enfold stage – and explored Yumiko Morioka’s life in music and amazing stories of life as a musician hanging out with YMO in the bubble era, creating a now-legendary but at the time overlooked ambient album, and her eventual return to ambient music, remembered through her self deprecating and humble sense of humour made for a really special evening.

KEF Music Gallery in central London’s listening room celebrated Music for Rest Rooms with a discussion on the process of making the piece, and intimate playback via their immersive system and high fidelity speakers.

Then, we were able to share the music in Berlin’s Reethaus - a stunning purpose-built listening experience room, with a specially-spatialised mix supported by MONOM , presented all-day long to a sell-out audience of nearly 600 people.

Many thanks to everyone who supported us, attended the events, and listened to our music.

Music for Rest Rooms is now in the process of being prepared for release, and in the meantime, we are brewing away with new projects with Sonic Minds and with Yumiko.

Sonic Minds is coming to London.

Our latest collaboration with Wonderfruit, Music for Rest Rooms, began as an exploration of spaces for rest and comfort, rooted in Yumiko Morioka’s home in the wilderness of Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Five musical moments, each paired with an aromatic cue, move through memories of time, place, feeling and scent.
Yumiko joins Nick Luscombe and James Greer in London this month to premiere the piece, alongside performances from her landmark 1987 album Resonance — a work that quietly shaped Japanese ambient music before disappearing, and found new life with its 2020 reissue.

13–18 July: Talks, playbacks, and live performances unfold across the Royal Albert Hall, Japan House London, St. Nicholas’ Church Brighton, and KEF Music Gallery, with a special DJ/hybrid set by Thai artist NOTEP at Spiritland.
