Studio Julie Marabelle

Studio Julie Marabelle Julie Marabelle is a creative studio exploring art, design, and modern craftsmanship. Formerly Famille Summerbelle. She exhibited her work in Paris and Tokyo.

Welcome to Famille Summerbelle, a creative company founded by French artist Julie Marabelle. What started as a personal project to create something unique and playful for her children’s bedroom has grown into an extensive range of illustrated products for family homes. In 2008, after a decade immersed in the creative scene of London—studying at Central Saint Martins and designing sets for theatre productions and launching Famille Summerbelle this same year—Julie embarked on a six-month travel around the world with her husband and their little toddler. She came back full of inspiration to start a series of intricate paper cut maps inspired by her travels and the Cities she had lived in. These maps, starting with Paris, became a signature of Famille Summerbelle. Julie’s delicate paper illustrations are hand cut on a single sheet of paper. She uses a chirurgical scalpel to skilfully cut all the details, a tool she has been using for designing theatre stage models. Each hand cut piece is then laser cut in limited editions in the Netherlands or hand screen printed in the UK. Her commitment to details and craftsmanship is evident in every piece. She appreciates the way a work of art, whether delicately cut or brightly coloured, will bring a sense of belonging and joy in people's interiors. With nature as a major source of inspiration, Julie describes her work as a continuous exploration of shapes, patterns and colours that she expresses through intricate paper cuttings, drawings and paintings. When she’s not in her studio, you’ll find Julie on her bike cycling along the canals of Amsterdam, where she lives with her family. As a freelance illustrator, Julie has collaborated with International brands such as Issey Miyake, Bonton, Le Printemps , Panahome Japan, The Londoner Hotel Macao, BNP Paribas, the V&A and 72 & Sunny among others. Here, I feel like I’m stepping out of my comfort zone: full-coverage patterns! I really enjoyed creating them. Starting with a blank page always panics me but once I start shutting down the inner voice and start getting in the flow I can go on for hours. The first few drawings are warm ups, but then what comes next is usually more interesting. I could easily imagine these water lilies (I love the French word nénuphar) printed on fabric, or perhaps on a beach towel, cushion covers? Any ideas?!

Never underestimate self-initiated projects, they can take you further than you think ✨

What started as a personal project for my daughter’s room when we got back from traveling the world

ended up becoming one of our best-selling hand screen prints at Famille Summerbelle

and eventually made its way into PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE collection in Japan!

featured globally on garments, bags, scarves, and ponchos! I love how a single artwork can renew itself and live so many different lives.

Moral of the story: always make space for those passion projects. You never know where they’ll take you! ✨

First attempt to film myself 😅 just to show you my original paper cut map of the world as I’m about to take everything down to paint my studio wall.
This is the original one I designed after returning from a 6-month trip around the world with our little Ophélia, who was 2 at the time. I wanted to make a keepsake of the trip for her room to show her all the places we’d traveled to.
I’m showing you the back because I illustrated and drew the map in reverse using a pencil and a surgical scalpel.
I liked the idea that once everything was cut, I flipped the map over…ta-da! to reveal the coloured side: no pencil marks, just the lace-like cut in colours and all the stories it revealed! This was a pretty magical moment!

A Saturday of slow craft at Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier I loved diving back into the intaglio printmaking technique and discovering the art of making plant-based inks with Painting Plants
It’s a process that demands real precision, strict steps, and a lot of patience. But that final gesture, turning the heavy wheel of the printing press and revealing the embossed print from the etched zinc plate onto the damp paper is a moment suspended in time. So incredibly rewarding!

It’s already Friday, and already October! The sun floods my studio in the afternoon, I have to draw the curtains because it gets so hot. I’ve been productive this September ✨ creating in my studio gives me so much energy. Tomorrow, I’m attending an etching workshop where we’ll be making our own inks from plants and flowers. I’m currently preparing a drawing to print. It’s a technique I love, but I haven’t done it in years. I can’t wait to try it again!
