Most laminate benchtops don't fail on the surface. They fail underneath it, at a join beside the sink or the edge of a cut-out, where water reaches raw particleboard and the core swells until the laminate lifts. There's no repair at that point. The whole length comes out.

Laminex publishes the spec that prevents it, spread across its data sheets, installation guides and warranties. Hardly anyone reads them before picking a colour. Three things from them worth knowing before you sign a quote:

The high-pressure laminate sheet is 0.7mm nominal. That's the whole wear layer, and it relies on the board underneath staying dry.

Laminex's own installation guide says its Handitops Standard range shouldn't be used for high wear. A family kitchen is high wear.

Melteca is a cabinet material, not a bench. Laminex's data sheet says not to use it on sink benchtops.

So ask for the grade and the core on the quote line. "Laminex HPL, Natural finish, on moisture-resistant particleboard" tells you far more than "laminate benchtop, white".

𝗪𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲.

"We had outstanding service when replacing our kitchen cupboards and drawers — excellent advice and communication, and installation was on the exact date indicated at time of ordering."
— Helen Lewis, Auckland

The installation date being exact to the day indicated isn't an accident. It's because we manufacture in-house, manage our own supply chain, and don't rely on a third-party manufacturer who might push your job back.

When we give you a date, we mean it.

The conversation around engineered stone in NZ has shifted significantly. If you're planning a kitchen renovation and that was the benchtop you had in mind, there are things worth understanding before you commit.

The good news: the alternatives have improved markedly. Porcelain and sintered stone surfaces now match engineered stone on aesthetics and durability — and beat it on heat and scratch resistance. Granite, laminate, and timber all have legitimate places depending on your budget and brief.

We've compared all 10 options with real NZ costs and honest trade-offs.

The back of a corner cabinet is where good cookware goes to die.

The big crockpot, the roasting pans, the storage containers you only crack out after a birthday — all shoved into a corner you can't reach without getting down on your hands and knees.

The fix is a pull-out corner unit. Four trays, the whole lot sliding clear of the cabinet, so the corner comes to you. Full access, nothing lost in the dark.

Cameron (Stefano Orlati) walks through the unit we fit 👆 If you've ever lost a sieve in the corner for a year, this one's for you.

Save this for your kitchen plan.

Architect Mary Daish learned a discipline from her food-writer mother — never more than three ingredients on a plate. The same logic works in a kitchen, and we apply it on every project we design.

Three materials, well-chosen, holds together. Stone, oak, brushed brass. Or matte black, walnut, honed concrete. Or paint, timber, brushed nickel. Three is enough to make a room sing without making it shout.

Five materials is when the room starts arguing. The fourth material competes with the second. The fifth has to negotiate with the first. The eye loses the centre of gravity. The room reads busy even when each material is good in isolation.

You’ll see this in a lot of new Auckland kitchens. Stone benchtop. Tile splashback. Timber island. Painted cabinetry. Brass hardware. Black tap. Wood floor. Patterned rug. Eight surfaces, all selected separately, none chosen for each other. The result isn’t ugly — it’s just unsettled.

The discipline isn’t about being austere. It’s about being deliberate. We start every material schedule with three. If a fourth has to come in, it earns its place by replacing something else, not by being added on top. Same with the fifth, if it ever shows up. Most of our finished kitchens come in at three or four materials. None at six.

Cooking, like cabinetry, is mostly an exercise in restraint. The best kitchens we’ve built are the ones we said no to most often.

If you’re standing in a tile shop with five samples in your hand and not sure which way to go — that’s the conversation worth having before you order. DM us.

Two shaker doors can look identical on a sample board and behave completely differently in your kitchen for the next ten years.

Shaker describes how a door looks: a square frame around a flat, recessed centre. It says nothing about how it's built.

In New Zealand, a shaker door is usually one HDF MR board with the profile formed in, then wrapped in vinyl under heat and vacuum. One continuous wrap with no join in the recess, which is where a separate edge or sprayed coat tends to fail.

That wrap comes with rules from the door maker: watch surface heat above 50°C, no steam mops, and plan handle positions before the doors are ordered.

The other route is a paint-ready door finished by a painter. Any colour and sharper detail, but an extra trade and a finish that depends on the spray work.

The guide covers both, plus solid timber, and what each means for cleaning, handles and warranty claims.

HPL benchtops aren't fancy. They're often the smartest budget call in a kitchen.

Prime Panels' HPL benchtop range is high-pressure laminate manufactured at NZ Panels Group's Christchurch facility. Fully sealed edges, post-formed profiles, and a colour and texture range that mimics stone, timber, and concrete.

Where it works: family kitchens where durability matters more than the bench being the focal point, rentals, holiday homes, anywhere the budget should go elsewhere — better hardware, better appliances, more cabinetry.

What to know: HPL isn't heat-resistant — a hot pan straight from the oven will mark it. You can't run waterfall ends or large overhangs with HPL the way you can with stone. On long benchtop runs, joins are visible (typically at every 3-3.6m). And once HPL is damaged, you replace the section — it can't be polished out.

Tends to suit: kitchens where the stone benchtop budget would force compromises elsewhere. Sometimes the best benchtop is the one that lets the rest of the kitchen be better.

Wondering if HPL is the right call for your kitchen? DM us — we'll be honest about where it shines and where stone earns its premium.

Every L-shaped kitchen has the same cupboard. You kneel on the floor, reach past the pot you wanted, and find a salad spinner you forgot you owned.

Corner hardware fixes it, but only if it's chosen before the cabinet is drawn. Each mechanism needs a set cabinet width, internal height and door size.

Häfele's LeMans swing-out, for example, is listed for a 900mm cabinet with a 450mm door or a 1,000mm cabinet with a 500mm door, with each shelf rated to 25kg.

Sticking with fixed shelves? Laminex rates an 18mm Melteca shelf carrying 50kg per square metre to an 830mm single span. A wide corner shelf loaded with cast iron can be past that without a mid-support.

Before you look at any hardware, measure three things: the cupboard's internal width, its internal height and its door width. The guide compares swing-outs, pull-outs and carousels using the manufacturers' own numbers.

Feeding the kids and getting homework done — at the same time, in the same spot.

Lisa (Lisa Cruse Design) designs for how families actually live. Her move: a rounded section at the end of the island, set at a slightly different height, so kids can gather while you cook. You're present, you're talking about their day, dinner's still happening.

The height change does double duty — it demarcates the zone. A wood benchtop against a stone top gives you the contrast and quietly signals it's serving a different purpose.

Save this if your island is the busiest spot in the house.
