Valley Dahlias

𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 - 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧

Some of you may have bought seeds from me & from other places. As we get into the season of growing dahlias from seed, here are a few points for the newbies:
* When growing dahlias from a tuber or cutting, you get the bloom that you see.
* When growing dahlias from seed, be prepared to expect the unexpected, coz the bloom can be anything because the seed has genetics from the seed parent & pollen parent (just like human babies).
* The bloom grown from seed could be better than the bloom from the seed parent or it could be less than average. I grew about 30-odd dahlias from seed last year & ended up keeping about 10 which I really liked.
* When you grow dahlias from seed, they will bloom in the first season & will form tubers by the end of the season.
* Each seed from within the same seed head has the potential to give you a different bloom.

Growing from seed is all about the suspense and anticipation of what the bloom might be. So fasten your dahlia seat belt & be prepared to enjoy the roller coaster :)

What are the chances of getting 2 seedlings that look alike? On the left is a seedling from a Wizard of Oz seed while on the right is a seedling from a Night Butterfly seed. Both from last season... Nature is amazing isn't it 🙂🙂🙂

At the far back of the second pic you will see the first collarette as a blur 🙂

So, this teeny tiny fella broke off when I was hosing my clump. Dabbed some rooting hormone, popped him into cutting mix and put a dome on top. Let's see if this little fella turns into a cutting 😊

Exciting to see that a few dahlia seeds have germinated 😊😊😊 Day 8 and day 6 (left and right trays). I haven't misted the soil after sowing the seeds. The closed lid on top has produced condensation creating a self watering effect. The trays are on a heat mat.
