ADA-ICONICA 79 is out.

This issue asks what it means to build, preserve and belong. We look at built environment, evolving practice rather than something frozen in time, and walk through ASTOLA, a LEED Platinum pharmaceutical campus in Korangi that treats the workplace as a sanctuary.

Heritage isn't frozen in a glass case. It lives in the hands that carry it forward. ๐ŸŒฟ
At Pakistan Heritage Exchange 2026 British Council Pakistan & ICOMOS Pakistan experts, makers, and community custodians gathered in Lahore to ask who truly safeguards our traditions. The answer: the people who practice them every day.

Through panels, live craft, and The Indivisible Spirit exhibition by CROM Lahore, one idea stood out: heritage survives through practice, transmission, and cooperation.

Getz Pharma's ASTOLA Head Office proposes another understanding of the corporate workplace โ€” one where productivity does not come at the expense of human well-being.

Designed by architect Ahmed Mian of Studio Subtractive, the workplace holds space for every rhythm of the workday: concentration, collaboration, informal exchange, retreat and recreation.

Behind it is an interdisciplinary approach across architecture, interiors, environment and industrial design, with sustainability and meaning at the centre.

At ASTOLA office becomes less an institutional container and more an environment designed around the rhythms of the people who inhabit it.

"The art and life of Meher Afroz โ€” artist par excellence."
A retrospective spanning five decades (1974โ€“2025), Meher Afroz's "Connecting Internal and External Time" marks 40 years of Chawkandi Art. Curated by Nilofur Farrukh across Chawkandi Art and Alliance Franรงaise, the show moves beyond linear chronology โ€” reading Afroz's oeuvre through memory, migration, faith, and resistance.
A rare, unpretentious window into one of our most significant living artists as penned by Amra Ali.

ASTOLA: A WORKING SANCTUARY
Getz Pharmaโ€™s New Karachi Headquarters

In the industrial heart of Korangi, ASTOLA proposes an alternative to the ordinary factory campus. Designed by Gul & Thariani, the LEED Platinum-certified facility unites pharmaceutical production with a workplace built around light, landscape, and human wellbeing โ€” courtyards, gardens, and water threading through a disciplined, rust-and-ochre exterior.

Inside, a dramatic sky court carved through the third and fourth floors anchors four colour-coded zones, while a thousand-seat auditorium, a library and gaming zone, and courtyard gardens turn the everyday workplace into something closer to a community. As CEO Khalid Mahmood puts it, the project takes its name and spirit from Astola Island in Balochistan โ€” a sanctuary where varied forms of life converge.

Spanning over a million square feet and eight years in the making, ASTOLA marks Getz Pharmaโ€™s second major architectural chapter with ADA, continuing a dialogue between industry, design, and culture that began back in 2009.

ADA-ICONICA ISSUE 79 IS OUT NOW
Featuring the Getz Pharma Astola Facility on the Cover

The edition arrives with the Getz Pharma Astola facility gracing the cover โ€” a workspace nearly two decades in the making, radically rethinking what a workplace can be. Beyond fiscal walls, Astola turns its attention to human boundaries, well-being, and identity, weaving modular, multi-outreach spaces into its layout and interiors.

Rooted in the energy of cosmopolitan Karachi yet speaking a global design language, Astola is glocality in built form โ€” where function, aesthetics, and identity meet.
