Before You Replace Your Digital Lock, Check These 4 Signs!

Your digital lock is acting strangely. It struggles to lock, makes unusual motor noises, or says "unlocked" even though the door won't open.

Naturally, you might assume the lock is faulty and start looking for a replacement.

But what if your digital lock isn't actually broken? 🤔

One commonly overlooked cause of digital lock problems is door and strike plate misalignment.

Over time, door hinges can shift, the door may sag slightly, or adjustments during renovation can affect how the locking bolt aligns with the door frame.

When this happens, the lock may struggle to extend or retract its bolt smoothly, even when its electronics are working correctly.

**Here's what homeowners in Singapore should know:**

✅ A door that needs extra pressure to close may have an alignment issue.

✅ A struggling lock motor doesn't necessarily mean the motor is defective.

✅ Locking problems after renovation or door adjustments may be related to changes in alignment.

✅ An "unlocked" announcement doesn't always mean the mechanical bolt has fully retracted.

If your door still won't open after one gentle push or pull while unlocking, stop and seek professional assistance rather than forcing it.

Whether you're using a digital lock on an HDB, BTO or condominium main door, proper door alignment matters just as much as the lock itself.

A faulty-looking digital lock doesn't always need replacing. Sometimes, the door needs attention instead.

“Carrying a key is simpler than a powerbank.”

That comment has 47 likes. I sell digital locks, and here’s my honest take: it’s built on one mistake.

A digital lock doesn’t mean no keys. It means more than one way in. A normal lock gives you one. Lose the key and you’re outside. A digital lock just means you need that key a lot less.

First few years, you’ll hardly touch the key. Battery low, the lock warns you. Battery dead, on most locks a powerbank gets you in. But keep the key with you, not inside the house. It’s your backup way in.

The habit that matters: you don’t wait for your phone to hit zero before charging it. Same with your lock. Charge or change the batteries on a routine.

Still, it’s electronics, so one day it will act up. Before it does, it shows you signs:
1. It makes weird noises
2. A part stops working properly
3. It has trouble locking

For locking trouble, it might not be the lock. The door may have sagged a bit over time, so the bolt doesn’t line up like before.

So until you see these signs, that key is just your backup. When you do, get the lock checked before it becomes your only way in.

Had your lock a few years? Save this so you know what to look out for.

We Removed the Battery From a Digital Lock. Can You Still Get Out in a Fire?

We removed the battery completely and locked the door. Here’s what happened from both sides.

Outside: nothing. No battery, no keypad, no way in.
Inside: push the handle, door opens.

Getting in needs power. Getting out doesn’t. Most mortise digital locks open from inside with a mechanical handle, and many rim locks use a manual thumbturn. Neither needs the battery.

And a power trip won’t lock you in either, because these locks aren’t connected to the mains at all. They run on their own batteries.

The real risk is a family member who has never opened the door from inside under pressure. If you’ve just installed a digital lock for your parents, get them to try it once.

Most important of all: in a fire, close the door behind you when you leave. It slows the fire and smoke from reaching the corridor. Use the stairs, call 995.

Share this with family who are still worried about switching.

“If there’s a fire, a digital lock becomes your coffin.”

I see some version of this comment almost every week. So I tested the worst case: battery taken out completely, door locked.

From outside? Dead. Keypad doesn’t light up, can’t get in.
From inside? I pushed the handle and the door opened.

That’s the part most people mix up. Getting in needs power. Getting out doesn’t. The inside handle on most mortise digital locks is mechanical. It moves the bolt by hand, not by motor.

And a power trip? Your digital lock isn’t wired to the mains. It runs on its own batteries, so it doesn’t even notice the lights going off.

But here’s where I’d be careful.

Not every lock opens the same way from inside. Mortise locks usually use a handle you push or pull. A lot of rim locks use a thumbturn, the small k**b you twist. Both work with no battery. The problem is when someone at home has never actually done it.

In a fire nobody reads the manual. Kids, elderly parents, your helper. If it was my parents’ place, I’d make them open the door from inside once, today, while it’s calm.

One more thing, and it matters more than the lock: when you get out, close the door behind you. A closed door slows the fire and smoke from spreading into the corridor and to your neighbours. Use the stairs, not the lift, and call 995.

Save this, and send it to the person at home who still thinks digital locks trap you.

One of the easiest times to accidentally knock a new digital lock is when the home isn't even occupied yet.

Why?

Because during renovation, the front entrance is still being used as a worksite.

Carpentry, furniture, appliances, boxes, tools and large items are constantly moving through the doorway.

Once a digital lock has been installed, its handle and body are sitting directly beside that traffic.

One careless turn with a long piece of carpentry or bulky furniture can knock the lock unnecessarily.

That's why Interlock generally recommends planning the lock early but installing it after the heavier renovation work is complete. Our current BTO guidance specifically advises fitting the lock later so it isn't unnecessarily exposed to renovation dust and knocks from contractors. Interlock Singapore
But waiting until the very end to start thinking about the lock can create another problem.

If you're changing the main door or gate, the lock setup should already have been considered.

Door thickness, available mounting space, frame and strike position, existing cut-outs and the clearance between a door and gate can affect which lock combinations are suitable.

So there are really two separate decisions:

When should I CHOOSE the lock?
Early enough that the entrance can be planned around the intended setup.

When should I INSTALL it?
After the heavy renovation and furniture-moving stage has largely finished.

The rule is simple:
Choose early. Install late.

It helps you avoid two very different problems: planning an entrance that doesn't suit the lock you eventually want, and exposing your brand-new lock to unnecessary renovation knocks before you've even moved in.

19/10/2026

One of the first things I’d choose for the entrance is also one of the last things I’d physically install.

Your digital lock.

That sounds contradictory until you look at what your front doorway goes through during renovation.

Before you move in, practically everything comes through that entrance.

Carpentry. Furniture. Appliances. Long panels. Boxes. Trolleys. Ladders.

People carrying bulky things through a relatively narrow doorway.

Once your new digital lock is installed, the lock body and handle sit right beside that traffic.

So even if the lock is ready, I wouldn’t rush to install it while heavy movement is still happening.

It’s an expensive finished product sitting in what is temporarily a work zone.

Interlock Singapore recommends completing compatibility checks early, but installing after heavier renovation works to avoid unnecessary dust and knocks.

But here’s where people can swing too far the other way.

Don’t wait until everything is finished before even CHOOSING your lock.

Especially if your renovation includes a new main door or gate.

The lock, door and gate are not three completely independent purchases.

Door thickness matters.

Frame and strike position matter.

Mounting space matters.

And if there’s a gate, clearance matters too.

A lock can appear suitable on its own but still conflict with the full entrance setup.

So the timing I prefer is:

CHOOSE EARLY

Know your lock setup before finalising your door and gate decisions.

INSTALL LATE

Let the carpentry, furniture and heavy moving finish first.

Then install the lock in your finished home, not a temporary construction site.

That’s the distinction.

Choosing early prevents planning problems.

Installing later reduces unnecessary physical exposure.

So if you’re currently renovating:

CHOOSE EARLY. INSTALL LATE.

Send this to whoever is coordinating your renovation before somebody asks, “Eh, digital lock can install already anot?” 😂
