Hand hygiene is the #1 way to prevent the spread of pathogens. Because high touch items are common pathogen transmission vectors, raise awareness of frequent hand hygiene while performing routine cleaning and disinfecting these items to help reduce infection risk.

12/06/2019

Have you ever seen mold growth behind your toilet? Take a look at these pictures that show the presence of microbial growth. Most of the time this occurs when the colder surface temperature of the toilet (due to the cool water inside it) cools the temperature of the wall directly behind it. Once the wall temperature drops below the dew point, moisture condenses and usually results in mold.

Microbial growth usually forms behind your toilet through the process of condensation. For example, when your shower is used, warm and humid air is introduced into the environment of your bathroom. This moist air can hit the colder toilet and condense. Over time, if not correcting the problem, you can end up with a serious case of mold in your home. Bathrooms are more prone to microbial growth because they often provide the right conditions for mold to appear. It is a high humidity area with limits in proper ventilation because the toilet is usually in an enclosed, windowless space.

Bathroom mold prevention should be one of your primary concerns with your home. You should inspect your plumbing system regularly as well as allowing as much air circulation as possible (leave fan on, open window, etc.) in the bathroom. Also clean the area regularly. This will help limit the amount of moisture in your bathroom. If you have tile, make sure you use an effective grout sealer. If your bathroom is painted, ensure that the paint is easy to clean and creates such a hard and smooth wall surface that resists mold growth.

I hope this information has helped in some way. The best way to prevent mold is to be proactive. So, make sure you keep a steady eye on your bathroom because it is a perfect environment for mold to form, and you don't want that. Take care everyone and be vigilant with your bathroom because mold will take every opportunity available to grow in your home. Of course, if you DO end up with mold in your home, it is best to call the experts at ServiceMaster to get the job done right!

Have you ever seen drawers full of water from a leak or burst?

The damage resulting from a water loss in this home could have been avoided. The homeowner was away, out of town, when this disaster occurred in this house. Photos like these just reinforce the idea that it is best to turn your water off while away from the home for an extended time. There was so much water damage that we could not determine the source firsthand. As per usual, the heavy flow of water in this home caused a good deal of mold that will be costly to fix.

Before you leave on vacation it is a good idea to turn your water off at the main supply valve for your home. Many of the elements of plumbing and utilities run through the walls and floors and are mostly hidden from sight. If a pipe or part of said utility springs a leak or bursts while you are away from home while the main valve is open, water will run continuously, damaging your home exponentially more than if it were off. Another good reason for turning off your main water valve is simply to save money and conserve water. The scenario shown here is all too common, and your best insurance for avoiding a water loss is to turn it off while you are away.

The Lion and the Gazelle

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or gazelle: When the sun comes up, you better be running!

The lion wakes up with goals. It knows exactly what it must do to survive. The lion has a mission, a sense of urgency and purpose to capture it's prey. At the same time, the gazelle must run in order to save it's life like it's playing defense to survive.

This is so true. It really doesn't matter whether you are the predator or prey, every day is a struggle for all of us. Being a professional is no different than being the lion or the gazelle in this scenario. There will always be people who want your job, your position or visibility within your company. They are running after you. Maybe you are the lion and you want someone else's position so you are running after them constantly.

The moral:
Every day should be a struggle for your survival and it should definitely make you better at what you do.
While the gazelle is running away from something, (trying not to die) the lion is running after something. Most of us strive to be the lion who is running towards something rather than away from it. (gazelle).
Many opportunities present themselves every day. If you are a lion, you should have a good chance of capitalizing on opportunity. If you are on the other side and do not react quickly enough, the opportunity can pass you by. That being said, we hope you all have a wonderful week with hard work being the cornerstone of your success.

On This Day in History

Its hard to imagine, but it has been exactly two years since the massacre of a Las Vegas concert crowd where 58 people were killed and more than 800 injured.

Although the shooting only lasted for ten minutes, the death and injury tolls made this the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. History at the time of attack.

Stephen Paddock, 62, a retired man from Nevada targeted the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. He began firing at 10:05 pm, using an arsenal of 23 guns, twelve of which were upgraded with bump stocks - a tool to fire semi-automatic guns- in rapid succession. Within ten minutes he was able to fire more than 1,100 rounds of ammo.

The deadly shooting horrified the country and sparked intense debate over gun control legislation, with gun control advocates claiming that the use of bump stocks led to increased casualties. A year following the shooting, 11 states had banned bump stocks.

A popular speaker started off a seminar by holding up a $20 bill. A crowd of 200 had gathered to hear him speak. He asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?”
200 hands went up.

He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.” He crumpled the bill up.
He then asked, “Who still wants it?”
All 200 hands were still raised.

“Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” Then he dropped the bill on the ground and stomped on it with his shoes.
He picked it up, and showed it to the crowd. The bill was all crumpled and dirty.
“Now who still wants it?”
All the hands still went up.

“My friends, I have just showed you a very important lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, life crumples us and grinds us into the dirt. We make bad decisions or deal with poor circumstances. We feel worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special – Don’t ever forget it!

“People visit a wise man complaining about the same problems over and over again. One day, he decided to tell them a joke and they all roared with laughter.
After a few minutes, he told them the same joke and only a few of them smiled.

Then he told the same joke for a third time, but no one laughed or smiled anymore.
The wise man smiled and said: ‘You can’t laugh at the same joke over and over. So why are you always crying about the same problem?'”

ServiceMaster By Twins

There is an awful lot going on for this job.

On the first couple of photos (#1 & #2) you may notice that there are bubbling formations or "blisters" on the ceiling and walls. Blistering is often due to the paint losing its adhesion to the base coat or substrate (the underlying surface) such as drywall, plaster, or wood. For this job the case is that the drywall has been compromised. Water can also sometimes run down a home's walls and affect multiple rooms.

We take pictures for many reasons; often to cover our bases so to speak on why certain tasks were performed. On the next few photos (#3, #4) you can see that we used a lot of plastic for this job. We call this a tent. The plastic tube that is attached to the dehumidifier is used to concentrate heat while it pulls moisture away from the affected wood. We did this because the floors were beginning to buckle. If this is not done quickly (on day 1) then the insured will probably need to replace the flooring. It is imperative that we dry the flooring immediately. Because of our swift response, we are able to save the wooden floors that are contained in these photos.Containment is an indication of our effort to dry a certain specific area. If done quickly and correctly, we can stop the moisture from getting worse while eliminating the possibility of growth of mold spores in your home.

The next photos (#5 & #6) show that we installed a zipper on the plastic so that egress can occur without compromising the drying effort. We put up containment at those stairs to keep the insured's cats from interfering with our progress.

As you can see, there is a lot that goes into the work we do, and why we do it. In a situation such as this, it is important to reach out to us as soon after the damage as possible. We know what we are doing and have been experts for over 60 years! This can happen to any homeowner. We take pride in developing trust between us and our clients so that you can get the best help possible. That is what we do!
