Out with the old and rusty, in with the new and gusty!

Evaporative coolers aren't made to last forever, so after a 20+ year run, this one was finally ready to be replaced. The corrosion was actually worse than it seemed from the outside, so it is good timing for a new one.

Blue Ox Workshop removed the old cooler and disposed of it, then brought the new one onto the roof and installed it. I was able to reuse the old motor by client request since it was still running fine and was compatible with the new blower. I appreciate when my clients prioritize sustainability, so I'll gladly assist with a replacement if or when the old one gives out. They even qualified for a small rebate from Xcel Energy for using an approved model!

Let me get on my soapbox for a minute and talk about stadium seating...

Here we have a sports club with a new couch for their film room, and a platform that fit the old couch just fine, but not this new lounger. So Blue Ox Workshop rose to the task and built a complimentary platform in the same style that will help maximize the space in the room and give everyone a great view!

I used solid rafters and osb plywood for structure and plenty of support, then wrapped the box in matching carpeting to complete the built in look. Anyone else have a sudden craving for popcorn?

We all know what dry humor is, but what about dryer humor?

Deadpan jokes aside, here is a large closet turned laundry room, with one small problem - the room is in the exact center of the home, with no clear path out. Where do we vent to?

The general answer is "shortest and straightest path possible to the outside" but we also need to consider ease of access for cleaning, fire risk, drying efficiency, esthetics, and manufacturer requirements. Thankfully many manufacturers are making their dryers powerful enough to accommodate longer vent lengths. After careful consideration, we chose to go up into the crawlspace, then relatively straight across the garage to an easy exit point. You'll still need a ladder to clean the vent, but it's safer than a roof exit for lint accumulation and will be a more weather resistant location.

Most importantly, this client is thrilled to have main-level laundry for the first time in their life, and they are having so much fun doing laundry they can't dirty up their clothes fast enough!

Can I GRAB your attention for a minute?

One of my wonderful repeat clients had a request for installing a grab bar for their shower/bathtub, which I carefully lined up and secured properly into a stud in the wall. The last thing you want is to take the grab bar with you when you're holding onto it!

They were also looking for a solution to help ventilate their garage which can overheat when it's sweltering outside - to start I put in a passive air vent just to balance the air temperature between the two garage bays, and will consider adding a powered exhaust vent in the future for more airflow if necessary.

I enjoy working on focused, larger scale projects, but I also enjoy solving multiple challenges in one trip!

What good is a privacy fence with a 4 ft gap?! Not good enough, says Blue Ox Workshop!

I was able to take this small alleyway and add a fence where no fence was, tying into the existing fence running parallel to the wall and following the slope of the property with evenly spaced pickets. A small job deserves just as much care and attention as a large one... the same fundamentals I apply to a large fence job, I applied to this one too!

What small job can I help you with? No minimum job fee means I can give you high quality work at a reasonable price!

Big Brother is watching... but only if the cameras have power!

This client wanted their backyard floodlight replaced with a new security camera floodlight, and to charge the batteries on their other existing camera which they couldn't quite reach with their ladder. The good news is I have a nice big ladder and can reach high places, and I know my way around wired fixtures too.

While I was there, I also put on my landscaper hat and cleared some debris from rocks to freshen up the curb appeal. Take a peek at the last photo to see my new friend!

I also offer assistance connecting new systems and setting up accounts, if you need help with the technology side of a smart home. Always feel free to reach out and see if I can help you, the answer is probably "yes!"

My client noticed one of their deck posts appeared to be floating off the ground, which would be a cool optical illusion if it didn't mean the corner of the deck was completely unsupported. Thankfully it was caught in time, and Blue Ox Workshop was called to fix the problem!

This meant fully replacing all three 12 foot posts with new KDAT (kiln dried after treatment) pressure treated lumber, one by one, because yes... all 3 were "floating" and being held up by a few rusty screws and/or hope alone. Now there was also some rot on the railing in the corners, but since it was otherwise in good shape, I was able to use a wood filler resin to build out the board to its original thickness, removing only the rotted portion. Once everything was secured in place, the new wood was restained with a matching color, and this deck is ready to support the whole family again!

This brings me to one of my pet peeves/PSAs: seeing non-structural, non-exterior rated screws (usually drywall screws) in critical outdoor uses. Why? Lack of knowledge? Lack of care? Trying to save a few dollars? Half of these screws were spun out, heads snapped off, completely loose. All I can do is shake my head and replace them with the appropriate rated fasteners.

I've got these jobs on LOCK...er...s

This local volleyball club/org was looking to upgrade their "coaches corner" with some proper day storage and assigned mailboxes. They also wanted to balance their needs with their budget. I was able to design, then redesign, then cut/build/assemble on site and finish with enamel paint and a lovely stain for the bench which I think gives some visual interest along with the wall stripes behind!

Specifically I removed the back panel from the original design, and left off face frames that would hide the plywood edges. This saved materials and time, but also made it a bit trickier to make sure everything lined up well. The mailboxes above were half-lap joints that gave stability when glued but had to be cut precisely, accounting for every 1/16th inch variation in the wood itself. 3 hooks in each locker and huge cubbies underneath for boots, shoes, bags...

All my jobs are fun but this was one of my favorites! I appreciate the trust from my clients to make their visions come to life.

At Blue Ox Workshop we are always ramping up our services!

My client was facing some mobility issues, and purchased some ramps to make it easier to age in place. I was happy to lend my skills to help install them securely! Two of the ramps are removable, and one of them is installed permanently. Needless to say, the original hardware that came with the permanent ramp was lacking in quality, so I upgraded to my favorite concrete anchors (Simpson Titen HD anchors if you're curious) for added peace of mind.

Also please excuse the footprints on the ramp. I tested them thoroughly under my weight to make sure they were secure, and took pictures before I had a chance to sweep them off... I hate to leave a job site dirty, even if it's outdoors!
