October is one of the best months to slow down and look at the shape of your trees.
During the summer, full leaves can make a tree look healthy and balanced from a distance.
But as fall begins, the canopy starts to open up.
That can make it easier to notice whether a tree is carrying too much weight on one side, whether large limbs are growing too close to your house, or whether there are dead sections tucked inside the canopy.
The University of Georgia Extension lists warning signs such as tip dieback, yellowing or browning leaves, leaf shedding, undersized leaves, and thin crowns or canopies as things homeowners can watch for when trying to understand tree health.
Here is a simple October yard check:
Stand near your driveway, walkway, roofline, patio, and backyard.
Look up into the canopy.
Ask yourself where the largest limbs would land if they failed.
That one question can help you see your yard differently.
You do not need to diagnose the tree yourself.
You just need to notice when something looks different.
