The glimmer of fall is just beginning to show in my gardens. The dogwoods have a hint of crimson, the tulip poplars' gorgeous green leaves are tinted with yellow, and the redbud trees are presenting golden yellow. A mimosa in a neighboring yard is almost all scarlet. Add puffy clouds in a sky of blue and today was thrilling!

Yea! A grateful pollinator plant that the migrating butterflies love is the pink daisy mum. Will be amazed at how many different species of butterflies and bees that supports this time of year when not much else is in bloom.

šŸ¦‹ The butterflies are coming!

The first monarchs of the season have reportedly been spotted in north Georgia, which means thousands more are right behind them. Every year, they begin up in southern Canada and fly all the way to the mountains of central Mexico, a trip of up to 3,000 miles. You've got a short window to catch their migration—peak viewing usually lasts roughly four weeks, with the last stragglers trickling through around early November.

A few fun facts about our orange-winged visitors:

🧔 None of them have ever been to Mexico before. They're several generations removed from the monarchs that left Mexico last spring.
🧔 This "super generation" lives up to eight months. Summer monarchs (their parents) live only a few weeks.
🧔 They can cover as many as 100 miles in a day, and each butterfly weighs less than a paper clip.

Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground may be the best place to see them. The gardens' 15 acres of wildflowers provide a flowering oasis for hungry travelers.

Other good places to spot them include the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell, Atlanta Botanical Garden in Midtown, and Callaway Resort & Gardens in Pine Mountain. Go on a sunny afternoon, when they're most active.

Want to follow along? Journey North maps the migration in real time, using sightings reported by volunteers across North America; you can add your own sightings, too.

Cooler months brings us a variety of birds, for one bird's north is another bird's south. The beautiful Cedar Waxwings like our winters just fine, and the red cardinals too. Keep your feeders clean and full to invite our feathered friends to brighten up our winter.

I'm sitting by the pond writing an estimate for builder shrub removal and new front beds and PLOP! Ouch! The squirrel/s are throwing acorns at me! Several minutes of this and I am retreating to the deck. If only the hawks and owls around my yard could catch squirrels!

What a beautiful morning! I'm spending it among the flowers, looking after flower beds for others. Keep deadheading and feeding your flowers. We're going into the homstreatch for glorious autumn blooms!!

Fall flowers provide food and energy for migrating butterflies. I know it can be an effort to keep dead heading your summer blooms, but if you do so, you will have flowers for longer and butterflies to enjoy. The monarchs are just starting to appear in my gardens now.

Listening to the sounds of my pond, watching the gold finches dance among the echinacea, the hummingbirds are out, finishing up my demonstration to class about cottage gardens. Bliss

Georgia residents: please be on the lookout for Yellow-legged Hornet secondary nests. If you spot a nest like the one pictured, contact the Plant Protection team at [email protected].

Your help is critical. The Yellow-legged Hornet poses a serious threat to Georgia’s pollinators and to agriculture—our state’s number one industry.
