Does this month's hot, humid weather make you blue? To comfort you, here's a picture of how this weather makes Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata - what a wonderful phrase!) look fabulous, dahling, simply fabulous! Seeing it in bloom cheers me up every time I go out to the nursery yard, and since it has a long flowering period, it will continue to do so for a number of weeks!

Look at this lovely cut flower arrangement I won as a doorprize the other day - it makes great use of some native plants! I see cattail, wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea), and some lovely yellow flowers in the Rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan) or Heliopsis (False Sunflower) genus. We have all of those except the cattails in stock this summer, and check out the lovely examples of purple coneflowers and early sunflowers blooming in my back yard at the moment!

The 'White Swan' Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea 'White Swan') that I put in last fall is blooming for the first time, and it's going to be fabulous a bit later on in the season when that Blue Sage (Salvia azurea) behind it blossoms as well! If you'll be in LeRoy this weekend, stop on out at the Oatka Festival between 10:00 and 5:00 and say "hello!"

Do you like plants? Do you like chalk art that's EVEN better than this fabulous doodle in my driveway? (Hard to beat, I know.) Consider coming on down to Perry tomorrow, July 11th, to enjoy the annual Chalk Art Festival and say "hi" to us at our booth! Everyone who buys a plant at this festival gets a free lame joke if they ask for it - what a deal!

Looking for a native groundcover to fill in a bare space (or replace a non-native one)? We have two looking lovely at the moment - Golden Groundsel (Packera aurea) and Prairie Pussytoes (Antennaria neglecta)! The Golden Groundsel is just finishing up its bloom for the year; the flowers are great in bouquets, and the foliage is delightful all season, with purple undersides of the green leaves. Prairie Pussytoes is a slower spreader, all silvery and fuzzy and adorable, in addition to being a great host plant for a number of native insect species, which may or may not be silvery and fuzzy and adorable.
