What if the answer wasn’t building out or building up?

The Casanova Residence needed more space for a growing family and aging parents. A rear addition seemed like the obvious answer, but mature Monterey pines made that solution harder to accept.

So we looked at what the site was already offering. The answer was building down.

An ADU follows the natural fall of the grade, while a second-floor addition is set back and stepped with the slope.

You've outgrown your home. Now which direction do you go?

The office has taken over the dining table. The kids need more space. Your home still works, but not quite for the life you're living now.

So the question becomes: Build out or build up?

The two paths come with very different considerations for your lot, structure, timeline, and daily life.

What if more space didn’t mean giving up your yard?

For homeowners on smaller lots or in neighborhoods where outdoor space is precious, building up can be a way to add meaningful square footage without touching the backyard.

But before deciding what a second story should look like, there’s a more important question: Can your existing structure support it?

The foundation, framing, bearing walls, zoning, and height limits all affect what’s possible.

Homes should evolve as life evolves.

Human-centered architecture anticipates life changes by building flexibility into the design, ensuring spaces remain functional, relevant, and supportive over time.

Designing with foresight helps reduce the need for major future renovations and keeps homes aligned with how people live as their needs change.

A home that adapts is a home that endures.

Human-centered architecture isn’t defined by style, it’s defined by how a space supports daily life.

It considers how you move through your home, how light shapes your environment, and how your needs evolve over time.

From clear circulation to long-term adaptability, every decision is made to improve how a home feels and functions.

Most homes are designed around style. The best homes are designed around people.
Human-centered architecture begins with one critical question: How will this space improve your daily life?

It considers:
• How you move through your current home
• Where congestion or inefficiencies occur
• Where you naturally gather
• How morning and evening routines unfold
• What spaces feel underutilized

Because great design isn’t just about how a space looks. It’s about how it works for you every single day.

Every project starts with understanding how you live so the final result feels intuitive, not forced.

Most people think an architect is just there to design how a home looks.

But in reality, their role goes far beyond aesthetics.

An architect defines the structure, coordinates the details, and ensures your project is buildable, compliant, and aligned from the start.

Without that foundation, even the best ideas can fall apart during construction.

Learn what an architect actually does and why it matters.
