This is the third year for this massive stand of Hairy Aster. The honey and native bees have taken it over. I’m a big fan of asters. There are multiple varieties ranging in color from white to lavender to bright yellow. There are at least different types here at Sugarberry Slope including this Hairy, Saltmarsh, Soft Gold, White Heath, and New England, White Heath and Hairy. They bloom in late summer into fall when not much else is blooming. They look great growing near Goldenrod, which is another late bloomer. They can be clipped close to the ground or allowed to grow tall. Asters are a superior native fall bloomer to mums, and they can easily grow in planters so you can achieve the autumnal look you like.

Nothing says Fall quite like the warm smell of cinnamon and apples. The first of our 2026 holiday flavors, Grandma’s Apple Butter and Country Apple Pie jam, are cooling on the counter and the aroma remaining in the kitchen make me want to go put on a sweater.

Message us for your Autumn in a jar while supplies last.

Is a nice day for a little bee action and watching some college football.

If you’re needing a last minute appetizer for your watch party let us know.

We have Cowgirl Candy and Sweet Jalapeño Relish.

The relish can be easily mixed with cream cheese and spread on crackers.

The cowgirl candy combines candied jalapeños and sweet pineapple for an excellent combination of sweet and heat.

Come see us.

We answered a call regarding bees in a storage building. They had been there since at least spring of 2025, maybe longer.

It was a complicated removal, at ground level with the bees moving between three spaces in the lower wall.

They had lots of honey, pollen and most importantly, brood which we placed in their new hive box. We will check them in a few days to ensure it is queen right, and hope they make it through winter.

Honey extraction is the process of removing pure liquid honey from beeswax combs using centrifugal force or a crush-and-strain method.

We have an electric extractor that easily seperates the honey from the comb. It is a sticky mess, lots of work however the reward is pure sweet honey.

Here we are bottling some of the final product.

One thing we don’t see as much in the fall as we do in the spring is swarms. Bees swarm to reproduce. One hive becomes two, with each swarm. But the queens reduce laying in the fall, so that doesn’t apply, really. Sometimes a bee hive will be destroyed for some reason or another and the surviving bees congregate (hopefully with their queen).

In any event, Charles noticed a small clump of bees (100 or so) on one of our unused hive stands. We offered them a nuc box (5 frame box) and they walked right in. No queen was seen. We planned to add this little handful to one of our existing hives.

Two days later, a second larger (500 or so) swarm landed on another unused hive stand. I got our swarm trap and moved it to the hive stand. I wasn’t suited, but swarm bees rarely sting, so I scooped up as many as I could and put them the trap. The remaining bees walked right in.

I have to think the two swarms are related in some way, but who knows for sure?

Tonight, after dark, we will move one box next to the other one, then tomorrow merge the two into one and try to locate a queen. In the absence of a queen, we will merge them into one of our existing hives. On the off chance there is a queen we will see if one of our beekeeping friends needs her.
