Today was a day of awesome firsts. I got my miter saw out for the first time. And my nail gun. I only ended up with one cut that was short but I can use it on another window.
This window took me about 2 hours - not bad for a first time & being the person always leaving โ€œthe thing I needโ€ in the other room no less then a dozen times. And not having anyone else here to help.
And I love this style! Picture frame window casing. Itโ€™s modern & minimal plus the way itโ€™s trimmed out itโ€™s very forgiving! Especially when your walls are older plaster.
This week Iโ€™ll be getting the bigger front window trimmed out then on to the main floor bedrooms.

Oh just a little old before and freaking after! Exactly what Iโ€™ve been seeing in my head since I knew Iโ€™d found my paint colors. Next is all the trim which is going to get the same green but in a high glossโ€ฆtrust me. And new baseboard registers and returns with a mid century edge. These arenโ€™t super easy to find so itโ€™s taking me awhile.
Anyway, Iโ€™m in love.

Crazy how different the wall color looks just from a different angle. And can I just say how in love I am with my final color choices. It took me ages to decide but once I knew I just knew.

Itโ€™s been a ride & Iโ€™m in month 7. Working full time, doing this all by myself (so far), learning along the way, with minimal tears & injuries. Come along for the ride as I turn this into a sweet home and co-living space for gen x women.

Thereโ€™s honestly nothing like good old fashioned demolition. Itโ€™s good for the soul. Hereโ€™s all you need to do some real damage:

1. ๐‡๐š๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ. Honestly Iโ€™ve used my little โ€œapartment size picture hanging hammerโ€ I brought with me from CA. The big ones have a hard time getting the right angles when ripping out trim or prying out nails in floors or walls. Plus theyโ€™re also a lot heavier, and demo gets tiring fast.
Less than $15 at Home Depot. Use it for tack strip and all door or window trim removal. And lots of other random things.
3. ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ. Youโ€™ll need a good pair for pulling staples out of wood floors and other annoying minutiae you run into.
Thereโ€™s a reason they make this specifically for carpet removal. Donโ€™t try using a box cutter. And buy extra blades.

You want to hit the tile prybar with this. Do not use a hammer. Youโ€™ll thank me.
For tile removal with not too much damage. Great if youโ€™re also looking to salvage any of the tile for other purposes. Itโ€™s got a rubber coated head.

7. ๐’๐ก๐จ๐ฉ ๐ฏ๐š๐œ. Mine is a big one but you donโ€™t need a big one. Itโ€™s definitely a must have for easier cleanup especially if youโ€™re living in the place youโ€™re renovating.

Large and small are great. I do have some battery drivers but youโ€™ll be glad youโ€™ve got some good old fashioned ones too. You donโ€™t need power drivers to start.

9. ๐†๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ. My favorite ones are from Dollar Tree. Seriously. Buy a half dozen. Youโ€™ll thank me later.

There is BAD STUFF in all demo and debris. Even in sawdust. It doesnโ€™t have to be chemical to damage your lungs permanently. You can start with the disposable masks but please invest in the real deal sooner than later.
These ones are also from Dollar Tree. Iโ€™d invest in a heavier duty pair if I were doing heavier duty work.

You donโ€™t need to spend a fortune to get started! You can easily get ALL of the above for less than $200.

And donโ€™t forget Facebook Marketplace!! You can ALWAYS find tools, sh

When youโ€™ve got old anchors in your plaster wall theyโ€™re likely mostly metal and expanded in behind the wall, so donโ€™t expect to pull them out completely.
But you can usually pop off the tops for better patching and hereโ€™s how .
Tap the anchor in a bit; I use a small hammer and nail setter and gently tap around the metal edge till it starts to pop up a bit.
Then take your pliers and pull the metal and it will likely pop off leaving just the middle of the anchor in the wall which is the easiest fix.
Then take a sanding block to knock down any rough plaster edges around the hole, and then fill in the holes with joint compound.
Then you just do what you do with that. Letting it dry then sanding it down smooth and giving it another joint compound top off if needed, letting that dry fully and giving it a final knock down with your sanding block again.
Then youโ€™re ready to prime and paint! Thatโ€™s the fun part. Iโ€™m getting so close...

Turns out a hard factory reset is the only way your Honeywell digital thermostat can be fully cleared out of old schedules or programming.
Hereโ€™s how to do it!
