Good morning all... My spring painting tips
Exteriors....
First of all, prep of a work surface is most important part of any painting project... exterior, or interior...that being said... here we go with information overload....lol
1- a clean surface is the starting point. Always clean with pressure washer, or hand wash the surface. !!!!
We have some questions always asked to not wash our house before painting.... not.. if there is dirt, the paint won't last. You need clean, dry, and all rot and damaged wood replaced.
2-prep- big job here. Cleaning, caulking, repairs, priming any bare or repaired wood, and min. Of 2 coats top quality paints required.
3- brand of paint... well this is always debatable. Each brand has it's own qualities. Some are cheap and decent, some cheap and worthless, some high dollar and not so great, some high dollar and overall good quality, and some that are just great to work with.
4- our brand of choice is glidden branded products. They make lots of different grades, most are good, some are excellent.
5- where you buy your paints does really matter!!!! All mfg. Sell to the walmarts, local stores ect. All the way to the home improvement stores, and company branded stores. What's the difference.... read on...
Discount stores like the w.m. of the world sell the high end, to the budget priced paints. Usually their advertised high end paints are like the company stores bottom of the bucket lines of paints.
6- our choice of paints and why....
We generally promote the glidden premium lines of paints. Why, they work well !!! Go on like butter, look extremely well for years, and very predictable results. !!!
Remember, these guys have been around over 100 years !!! Consistency is the key .
7- paint sheens- flats, stains, emo gloss, and high glosses. The all have their individual uses, and most important... their intended use areas.
Lots of area to cover here.
I'll shorten it by my general uses.
Flats- uncoated/coated masonry. Doesn't repel water well, very little u.v. protection, bonds extremely well to raw masonry. Ask us, to much to type.
Satins - good overall for wood/siding. Repels water penetration decently. Has some u.v. protection. Decent paint, not the best... but a good starting point.
Semi- gloss - our mainstay.!!! Generally the best and most used by us. Has very good bonding qualities, great u.v. protection, and last very long time !!!!

Next issue, we will cover types of paint... latex, oils, urethane, proxies, ect... to many to list but we will cover a few basics latexes and oils primarily. As the other are complex in qualities and working abilities, and just better suited to the pros. Stay tuned, and any questions, just give us a call... thanks, Richard

Latest pictures of our honey bee project. Hives are busting at the seams, and looking very healthy. !!! We will ha e honey for sale in the fall and next spring. On a limited basis of course. As we just started our hives last spring/summer. They will need to have lots of winter stores for this winter. We will grow or hive count slowly , with healthy, strong new populations of bees. Splits as needed, to help prevent swarming. Hope the pictures give a good example of our progress. Other projects will be posted as we get them in the works..... Richard

Our 2018 beekeeping adventure continues. 1st year was a success, in my view. Started out with 2 packages of bees, and 1 swarm captured at Stevens Trading Post. Ended summer/fall with 8 active hives. Update... 2 lost to robbing, now 6 strong hives/nucs. Did not pull any honey this year, as the new bees need it for winter food. But, by July of 2019... we should have honey to sell, and give to our neighbors and friends !!! Also, we will post videos of hive inspections, and general working of the bees. Thanks, Richard Thomas

Beautiful weather we are having, always could use a little rain. Been working on new bees, and have 2 packages installed Monday 4-29-2018 . Both did well, and same day, I got a swarm collected from Rickey Stevens at Stevens Trading Post, formerly called Stevens poultry and hardware in Jones Chappell/ Cullman al. I will post a video of my first swarm capture as soon as it gets forwarded to me from Rickey. Thanks for letting me collect this swarm, and for always having just what I need on my farm, at your store.

Farm updates....2018 spring

Good evening everyone !!!
Farm news as follows, we have decided to add to our farm an apiary. Raising bees !!! We will at some point this year, produce local honey, and honey products to our farm . This will be a sustainable endeavor, to collect wild bees, and help save them in the wild, due to their decline. Most folks don't know, but honey bees are an introduced species. These we brought here from Europe during the settling of this continent. Bees have lots of benefits, main one being pollination of our crops, as well as orchards, and native plants, and trees. Ill post pics here as this endeavor grows slowly over time.
Also, we are looking forward to pasture renovation, which we started this past fall.
We will be looking at our commercial, and registered herds as well. We will be reducing our herd numbers to some extent, to achieve some of our shirt and long term goals as follows.
1 pasture rotations,
2 year round grazing
3 growing most of our own hay crops
4 sustainable farming, at its most basic level, and slowly increasing this and land, and management practices allow.
5 overall, these goals will take several long years to implement. Will cost allot of cash, and time, and resources.
6 conclusion - it is a long term goal to help in our goals to produce the best beef, in our registered and commercial herds. Genetics should be brought forward and best practices to make all things better for our animals, and as a farmer, improving our entire operation productivity, and the bottom line eventually.
