That's one of our guys on the ladder, pulling the cap to get a look down the flue before the first fire of the season.

Top-down is where you learn the truth. Flaky soot wipes off a brush easy, but if the liner is coated in that hard, shiny black glaze from slow smoldering fires and wet wood, a brush won't touch it. Burn dry, split hardwood with real air behind it this winter and next year's sweep stays routine.

Same chimney, two different weeks.

The brick on the left had gone dark and the joints were soft enough to scratch out with a key. We ground out the bad mortar and repointed the whole stack, then left the black cap in place since it was still solid. Dallas summers bake the lime out of old mortar and then the spring rain washes the rest downhill.

If your mortar lines look chalky or recessed, give us a call at (214) 301-0414 and we'll take a look.

Gas fireplaces get written off as broken every October, and nine times out of ten they're just dirty. 🔥

The usual culprits: a thermocouple coated in grime, burner ports packed with dust and spider webs from a long Dallas summer, or a pilot that won't hold because nobody's cleaned the assembly since it was installed. Soot building up on the logs is another tell. That's a burner problem, not a dead unit.

An annual gas fireplace service covers the pilot and thermocouple, burner ports, a leak check on the gas connections, plus the glass gasket and vent.

Give us a call at (214) 301-0414 and we'll get it lighting again before the first real cold snap.

Same chimney, two different days. 🧱

The left side is what we found: mortar joints washing out, a cracked crown, and a mesh screen rusted thin enough to crumble in your hand. We rebuilt the top courses of brick, poured a new crown, and set a stainless cap with a solid mesh cover. That lid is the only thing standing between the flue and the rain, the squirrels, and the birds already hunting a winter den around Dallas right now.

If you have not had eyes on your crown or cap in a few years, book a look at https://premiumchimneys.com or give us a call at (214) 301-0414.

That first puff of smoke rolling back at you usually isn't a dirty chimney.

A flue that's been sitting cold all summer is packed with heavy, dense air, and a tight Dallas house with the AC still cycling will happily pull air down the chimney instead of up. Roll up some newspaper, light it, and hold it up near the damper for a minute or two to warm that column of air. Crack a window in the same room while you're at it.

If the smoke still comes at you after the flue is warm, that's a different story. Could be creosote buildup, a bird nest in the cap, or a damper that isn't opening all the way, and that's worth a sweep and inspection before you burn again.

Give us a call at (214) 301-0414 and we'll come take a look.

Left side is where we start. Right side is an hour or so later.

Drop cloths down, vacuum running at the hearth, then brushing the flue from the top and again from below. Most of what comes out isn't in the flue at all, it's sitting on the smoke shelf and in the back corners of the firebox. A single season of burning in a Dallas house can fill a good part of a five gallon bucket with ash and soot.

A quick peek with a flashlight is not a sweep. You should see tools on your floor and debris leaving in a container.

First cool nights are close, and the calendar fills fast when it turns. Call us at (214) 301-0414 and we'll get you on the schedule.

A stuck damper is not a fireplace problem. 🙂

Reach up and push that handle. If it drags, grinds, or won't seat flat, that's rust, and rust means water has been getting in above the damper plate. Most of the stuck ones I pull open have orange flakes sitting on the smoke shelf, which tells me the real fix is up top: a cap, or crown-seal work where the crown has cracked.

Meanwhile a damper that won't close has been sending your cold air straight up the flue all summer, and it'll do the same with your heat come the first cool night.

If yours is fighting you, book an inspection at https://premiumchimneys.com or call (214) 301-0414 and we'll find where the water got in.

Left side is where we started. Patched brick, a wire cage cap doing about half a job, and water finding its way in every time it rained.

Right side is the rebuild. New brick from the roofline up, and a black metal cover and cap set on top so rain runs off instead of sitting there. That flat pooling is what rots chimneys in Dallas, and autumn rain is already here.

If you have seen rust streaks on your siding or a stain on the ceiling near the firebox, call us at (214) 301-0414 and we will get up there and look.

Same firebox, two different days. 🔥

Bottom shot is how we found it: lava rock, no flame, pilot dead. The burner ports were clogged and the thermopile had dropped too low to hold the valve open. We cleaned the burner, replaced the thermopile, and the homeowner swapped to blue glass media. Top shot is the first lit test, even flame all the way across.

Gas repairs like this one book up fast once the first cool evening hits Dallas, and the same goes for spalling firebox mortar, a warped damper, or a crumbling crown. All three are cheaper and quicker now than in December when you actually want the fire.

Give us a call at (214) 301-0414 or book at https://premiumchimneys.com and we will get it sorted before your first burn.

That black halo above the firebox is soot that crept out over a few winters of use.

Painter's tape went up, the white surround came clean, and the opening lost the staining that the homeowner figured was permanent. This one was a fireplace cleaning on a gas setup in Dallas, black logs and all.

While we were in there we checked the flue. On wood burners that sit a few seasons, creosote hardens into a tar-like glaze a brush skates right over, and that is worth finding before the first cool evening, not after you have already lit one.

Give us a call at (214) 301-0414 if you want yours looked at before it gets cold.
