🌽 It’s October, and that means one thing at MEG’s Edible Landscapes… POPCORN TIME! 🍿

Just look at those colors! 💛💜💙❤️

This beautiful ear of Carl’s Glass Gem popcorn is one of the varieties we’ve been growing all summer in preparation for our October Garden Experiences at senior living communities throughout Minnesota.

And now comes the fun part!

Imagine sitting around a table with friends, holding these colorful ears of corn, sharing stories of autumn harvests, family farms, and homemade popcorn.

During our October experiences, residents get to explore different varieties of corn, discover the incredible number of foods and everyday products made from this plant with a history stretching back roughly 9,000 years, and investigate what makes popcorn POP!

And here’s my favorite question to ask:

What color popcorn do you think these beautiful kernels will produce when we pop them? 🤔🍿

Purple? Blue? Yellow? Maybe a rainbow?

There’s only one way to find out!

That’s the magic of these experiences. A simple ear of corn becomes an invitation to be curious, make predictions, share memories, laugh together, and discover something new.

Because no matter our age, there’s still something wonderful about experiencing a little surprise.

Plants are the medium. Connection is the outcome. 🌱

We had such a mint-tastic time with Andrew from Meg’s Edible Landscapes! Our residents loved getting their hands in the dirt, exploring fresh mint, saving seeds, and enjoying some hands-on gardening fun.

We are so appreciative of Andrew for coming to spend time with us and sharing his knowledge and love of gardening. Thank you for helping us grow a little joy!

Be sure to check out Meg’s Edible Landscapes and all the wonderful things they’re growing and sharing!

Meet Paul Bunyan… butternut squash edition. 😂

We’re experimenting with a little Minnesota-inspired produce art for our senior living Garden Experiences.

Turns out a squash, Mod Podge, a Sharpie and a questionable amount of creativity can go a long way. 🌱🎨

Who would you turn into produce art?

Saving dill seeds for next season 🌱

Seed saving is a simple, hands-on way to explore where our food comes from and experience another part of the plant life cycle.

This is one of the activities we’re exploring for senior living programming this fall and winter.

🍓 Sometimes the best resident activities start with one simple question.

“Have you ever grown strawberries?”

I’ve watched that one question unlock stories about family farms, grandparents, homemade jam, and memories that hadn’t been shared in years. During one memory care program, it even inspired a resident to walk across the room to reconnect with memories of her family’s strawberry farm.

🎥 Here’s the 30-second activity:

This month’s session was a blast! We had a lot of experienced gardeners in this group. The table captains took the lead in pruning and staking the cherry tomato plants. 🍅
