🌲🍂 Are Your Arborvitaes Turning Brown on the Inside? Don’t Panic!

It’s that time of year again! One of the most common concerns we hear in the fall is, “Why are my arborvitaes turning brown? Are they dying?”

The good news? It’s probably completely NORMAL! 🌿

🍁 It’s called Fall Needle Drop!

Just like deciduous trees lose their leaves, evergreens naturally shed their oldest interior foliage too!

🌲 What’s Normal?
Yellowing or browning of the oldest interior foliage, while the outer foliage remains healthy and green. Take a look at our photos for examples of normal seasonal shedding!

⚠️ When to Be Concerned:
Browning of the outer tips, entire branches, or large sections of the tree may indicate a problem rather than normal fall needle drop.

🍂🌳 “Is It Still OK to Plant?” “How Much Longer Do I Have?”

These are two questions we hear almost every day this time of year!

The answer? YES! Fall is actually one of the BEST times to plant! 🌱

Trees, shrubs, and hardy perennials have an excellent opportunity to establish when planted in the fall!

🌧️ Free Watering! Cooler temperatures and seasonal rainfall mean less watering stress.

🌱 More Time to Establish! Fall planting gives roots time to grow through the fall and again in spring before facing one of the biggest stressors on new plants — SUMMER HEAT!

🍁 So, how much longer can you plant?

We typically stay open until around Thanksgiving week, when Northeast Ohio weather really starts changing and the ground begins to freeze.

As long as the ground is workable, there’s still time to plant many hardy varieties!

Our PJM Elite Star Rhododendrons must be a little confused about what season we’re in, because a few have decided to pop open some blossoms! 🌸

We’re not complaining, though — who doesn’t love a little spring color in October?!

These beautiful, cold-hardy evergreen shrubs offer something special throughout the seasons!
