Hosted by SKS Appliances

Three days in Napa with SKS Appliances — their showrooms, their test kitchens, their team.

I went in to learn the line and left thinking about “true to food” differently. It’s not a slogan they hang on a wall. It shows up in the decisions: separate climate zones because produce and proteins want different air. Sous vide built into the range because someone asked how food actually cooks before asking what an appliance should do.

I build and design homes, so I spend a lot of time around these choices. It’s rare to watch a team care about them this much.

Thank you for the invitation, the education, and some very good meals. 🤍

Some girls chase men. I chase around contractors who said they’d be here by 8. 🙃

Most people find us for the design. The building side tends to be the surprise.

Naomi holds her SC Residential Builder’s license, which means design and build don’t live in two different offices here — they live in one person. One team, one set of drawings, one person accountable from the footings to the final pillow.

What that looks like in practice on a site like McElhaney: decisions get made once. We’re not designing a kitchen and then waiting to find out whether it’s buildable — we already know. The wall that can’t move. The ceiling height that opens up if we adjust the truss. The window placement that makes the morning light land where you’ll actually sit. Those get solved at framing, while they’re still cheap to solve.

Good design isn’t just what you choose. It’s whether the house can hold it.
