🧠✨ ADHD Awareness — Day 22: Executive Dysfunction! 💕

Ever look at something you need to do and think:

😳 Where do I even start?

😩 This is going to take forever!

🫠 There are too many steps!

Executive dysfunction can make it difficult to start, plan, organize, or finish tasks, even when you genuinely WANT to do them.

💕 My experience:

Having routines helps me get started, but not always! Organizing is especially difficult because figuring out where to begin can feel overwhelming.

And sometimes just THINKING about how long something might take makes it harder to start! 🤣

✨ How can you help someone who’s struggling?

🩷 Limit the options. Instead of giving someone ten choices, try offering just two.

📝 Give a clear starting point. Sometimes “Start with this first” is more helpful than “What do you want to do?”

🧩 Break tasks into smaller steps. Focus on one thing at a time.

🗣️ Provide some structure. Personally, I do better when someone guides the conversation with specific questions rather than expecting me to lead it.

Everyone’s needs are different, so ask what kind of support works best for them!

💡 The takeaway: Sometimes helping someone with ADHD isn’t about giving them MORE options. It’s about making the next step easier to see.

🧠📚 ADHD Awareness — Day 21: Getting Support in School! 💕

Did you know students with ADHD and learning disabilities may qualify for educational support? And that help doesn’t necessarily stop after high school? 🎓

✨ IEP (Individualized Education Program)

Provides special education and related services to eligible students. ADHD may qualify under Other Health Impairment when it affects educational performance and the student needs special education. Students may also qualify under another disability category, such as a specific learning disability.

✨ 504 Plan

Provides accommodations for eligible students, such as extra time when appropriate, written instructions, movement breaks, or reduced-distraction testing.

💕 Parents, where do you start?

Contact your child’s public school and request an evaluation for special education and/or Section 504 eligibility. You don’t have to wait until your child is failing to ask for help!

🎓 Support After High School

Colleges have disability services offices where students can request accommodations. An IEP doesn’t automatically transfer to college.

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) may also help eligible individuals with disabilities pursue education or training connected to employment goals. Depending on eligibility and available funding, assistance may include tuition, supplies, and assistive technology.

💕 My Experience

I had an IEP for a learning disability involving reading comprehension before being diagnosed with ADHD during my senior year.

Later, Vocational Rehabilitation helped me attend college for Fashion Technology by covering tuition, supplies, and learning supports like a note-taker and audio textbooks!

📌 For U.S. families: IEPs and 504 protections are federal, but eligibility is individualized. State procedures and VR funding may vary.

💡 The takeaway: Sometimes students don’t need to work harder. They need access to the right support!

💬 Did you know these resources were available?

🧠💕 ADHD Awareness Month — Day 19: Body Doubling!

Have you ever found yourself getting more done simply because someone else was there?

There’s a name for that strategy: body doubling! 👯

Body doubling involves having another person present while you work on something. Their company may help you get started, maintain your attention, or see a task through to the end.

And guess what? That person doesn’t even need to be doing the same activity as you! 🤯

You might be working on separate projects, chatting on the phone, connecting through video, or just knowing somebody is working nearby.

✨ So why might body doubling help someone with ADHD?

🧠 Task initiation: Starting something that feels overwhelming may become a little easier with company.

🎯 Focus: Someone else’s presence can serve as a gentle cue to return your attention to what you’re doing.

🤝 Accountability: Seeing or knowing that another person is also working may give you extra encouragement to continue.

💕 Support: Even when you’re each busy with your own tasks, having someone around can make the experience feel less isolating.

Body doubling is one way some people with ADHD manage executive functioning difficulties, particularly getting started and sustaining attention.

It’s not a universal solution, though. For others, having someone around might actually make concentrating harder!

💡 Remember: You don’t always need another person to complete the task with you. Sometimes their company is the support that makes the difference.

🧠🔋 ADHD Awareness Month — Day 18: Different Types of Energy!

Did you know that being tired doesn’t always mean you’re out of energy in every way?

We actually use different types of energy throughout the day!

🧠 Mental Energy: Thinking, concentrating, remembering things, and making decisions.

💪 Physical Energy: Moving around, completing tasks, and keeping our bodies going.

❤️ Emotional Energy: Managing feelings, handling stress, and interacting with others.

⚡ Motivation & Alertness: Having the drive or excitement to do something, even when we’re tired.

For people with ADHD, these different types of energy don’t always line up!

You might be physically exhausted but mentally restless. Or your brain might be overwhelmed, yet something exciting suddenly gives you a burst of motivation.

And sometimes, having the motivation to do something doesn’t mean you have the mental energy to finish it!

✨ The takeaway: Just because you have energy in one area doesn’t mean your other batteries are full.

Learning to recognize your different energy levels can help you understand when to keep going and when it’s time to recharge. 💕

🧠 ADHD Awareness Month — Day 17
🎡 DECISION PARALYSIS — TOO MANY CHOICES!

Ever have SO MANY options that you end up not choosing anything?! 😳🤣

WELCOME TO MY BRAIN!

One of my favorite ADHD hacks is my TV SHOW WHEEL! 📺🎡

Instead of spending forever deciding what to watch, I let the wheel choose for me!

I actually have TWO wheels:

💗 Watch Vault: My master list of shows.

📺 Binge Vault: A duplicate where I remove shows as I finish them. Once it’s empty, I reset it using my master list!

And 95% of the time, I watch whatever the wheel chooses! The other 5%? Usually because I JUST watched that series! 🤣

But TV isn’t the only place I simplify decisions!

👗 Clothing: I keep grab-and-go outfits ready so I don’t have to figure out what to wear every morning.

🍽️ Dinner: 90% of the time, my answer is “YOU PICK!” 🤣 The other 10%? I’m probably in the mood to cook!

💕 Choices: Give me two or three options instead of a whole handful!

🧠 DID YOU KNOW?

ADHD can affect executive functions involved in comparing options, prioritizing, and making decisions. Having too many choices can sometimes feel overwhelming, even when they’re all good options!

💕 WHAT WORKS FOR ME?

I reduce the number of decisions I have to make. Sometimes I prepare ahead, sometimes I narrow down my options, and sometimes I let a wheel decide! 🤣

Sometimes I don’t need MORE choices. I just need FEWER decisions! 🧠💕

🧠 ADHD Awareness Month — Day 16
🌈 THE ADHD HACK THAT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR ME!

Can you guess which slippers are mine? 🤣💛

YUP! THE YELLOW ONES!

They used to be bright sunshine yellow, but after all that wear and tear, they’re more like dirty sunshine! 🤣🤣

Here’s something I’ve learned about my ADHD: BRIGHT COLORS HELP ME FIND MY STUFF!

I used to have a lot of black accessories, but I noticed I was constantly misplacing things. Once I started choosing brighter colors, I found myself losing things less often!

💗 Pink or yellow phone accessories
🧡 Orange sewing clippers
💛 Yellow slippers
🌈 Bright-colored everyday essentials!

And living in Hawaiʻi, where everyone leaves their slippers at the doorstep, having yellow slippers makes finding mine at a house party SO MUCH EASIER! 🤣🩴

🧠 WHY DOES THIS HELP?

ADHD can affect attention and working memory, making it easier to forget where we put things.

Bright colors create visual cues that help our belongings stand out instead of blending into the background.

💕 THE TAKEAWAY:

Not every ADHD hack needs to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes it’s as simple as choosing a color that’s easier for YOUR brain to notice!

Work with your brain, not against it! 🌈💕

🧠 ADHD Awareness Month — Day 15
🙅🏻‍♀️ SENSORY NOPE!

Just because something looks pretty doesn’t mean my senses agree! 🤣🧼

One of my biggest sensory NOPEs is BAR SOAP! I don’t like how it feels on my skin. Give me liquid soap any day! 🤣

But that’s not my only one!

🧼 Touch: Bar soap and certain fabric textures.

👕 Clothing: Collars too close to my neck make me feel like I’m being choked, even when they’re not tight! That’s one reason I prefer sewing my own clothes with open necklines.

🦐 Smell, taste & texture: Seafood is a BIG NOPE! And that musky seawater smell? No thank you! 🤢

🍒 Taste: Cherries remind me of cough syrup, so they’re not my favorite!

🧠 DID YOU KNOW?

Some people with ADHD experience sensory sensitivities that make certain textures, smells, tastes, or physical sensations especially uncomfortable.

It’s not always about being picky. Sometimes a sensation can be genuinely overwhelming!

💕 WHAT HELPS ME?

Instead of forcing myself to tolerate everything, I make adjustments where I can. Whether it’s choosing liquid soap or sewing clothes with comfortable necklines, little changes make a difference!

Sensory comfort isn’t always about what looks good. It’s about what FEELS good to you! 💕

🧠 ADHD Awareness Month — Day 14
🤔 WHERE WAS I GOING WITH THIS?!

Have you ever been in the middle of telling someone something, gotten interrupted, and completely FORGOTTEN what you were going to say?! 🤣

WELCOME TO MY BRAIN! 🧠💕

This happens to me ALL THE TIME! And sometimes that missing thought doesn’t come back until HOURS or even DAYS later! 😳🤣

🧠 WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?

ADHD can affect working memory, which helps us temporarily hold information in our minds. An interruption can make it harder to remember what we were about to say.

💕 WHAT HELPS ME?

I love talking with people who can keep up with my train of thought!

When I ask, “Wait, what were we talking about?” they can remind me of the topic, and suddenly…

“OH YEAH! THAT’S WHAT I WAS SAYING!” 🤣

Sometimes we don’t need someone to finish our sentences. We just need a little reminder of where we left off. ❤️

And if I randomly bring up something from three days ago, JUST GO WITH IT! My brain finally found the missing file! 🤣🧠
