Vintage reselling - Talent, skill, luck?
Maybe a mix of all 3! If we’re talking about the process of actually thrifting and finding items, sometimes it’s just being in the right place at the right time when a fresh cart gets rolled out! Sometimes the best items never even make it to the shelf.
I do think that some people inherently have an eye for design, but it’s definitely a learned skill to be able to walk into a packed thrift store and pick out the two things on the shelf that may be quality vintage or antique items. Over time, you learn a way of scanning quickly, then handling an item can tell you if it’s a good buy or not. Knowing makers marks, looking for any damage, having a general idea of what you could sell an item for, helps you make quick decisions instead of being the person standing there using Google lens to scan every single item (please don’t be this person 😆🫠)
Do you think finding the good stuff at thrift stores or estate sales is luck? Or is there a real talent or skill involved, beyond just showing up and looking?
