Fall is time for planting! And it was time for this client’s dianthus to go! The bunnies were constantly having a field day!! Our arch nemesis!! With their new walkway complete, a refresh was in order. We chose some bunny-resistant hyssop and bee balm to bring it all together. 🌸 🐝

Let’s talk shrub restoration! 🌿 🌳

This is Step and Year One of a multi year process. 1️⃣

These Japanese Hollies are at a new client’s property, and they’ve been consistently gas pruned year after year. To the untrained eye they MAY look nice and green on the outside—but take a look at what’s going on INSIDE in these videos.

All that pruning has created a DENSE shell. Underneath, there’s deadwood, congestion, and very little light or air getting through. The health of the shrubs is severely compromised, and those conditions can create a breeding ground for disease.

So I am hand pruning these, creating openings, sawing out large branches, removing deadwood, and thinning parts of that outer shell to let light, air, and water in, giving the opportunity for new growth.

Restoring shrubs like these can take three years of consistent care, to bring them back to better health and a beautiful shape.

For reference- as someone who considers herself a quick pruner, this one hedge took me 5 hours. And accumulated about 8 barrels of debris.
